What do you do if your elevator pitch isn't getting you ahead in your career?

I'd refine a few things if my elevator pitch needs to be fixed. Specifically, here are a few things to consider. First, do I have a few different pitches depending on the audience? People respond to people they understand and like. With a few different pitches, you can tailor your message more successfully. Second, am I approaching it in a way that showcases either my passion or my accomplishments? Remember, people hear much more from your nonverbals than your actual pitch. They will also be if you are bored by what you are saying. Third, is it memorized and spoken in a conversational tone? Most people don't want to be sold to so just converse. Last, not everyone is a fit. It's a balance between pitch, timing, delivery, and audience.

The pitch should address the following concerns: 1. Why Me? [As audience] 2. Why You? [As the presenter] 3. Why Now? [Why is this topic relevant now?] 4. Why This? [Why is this topic important?]

I usually use the principle of The Hero Story. In every movie, there is usually a hero and the guide that helps the hero to win or out from the difficult situation or solve the problems. In the seller pitch, we are the guide not the hero. Our client is the hero. That’s why we need to refine our message to tell them that we are here to help our client solve the problems. By convincing them that they are the hero, people will listen and put attention more to our pitch

Practice makes perfect Some tips that I do - watching Ted talk how the speaker present with the conviction and body language - visualise the moment, by imagining what will happen it helps me to control my thoughts - practice with colleagues and ask the feedback - refine and repeat the process

I used to joke with my fellow participants during our workshop. Elevator pitch should be your main asset- you practice it so many times until you could even do that while you're half asleep! Jokes asides, practice trains our muscle memory. And that's what we want eventually. Practice makes permanent.

In my experience we should be open minded when seeking feedback from the people we have in our network. Trust me this will work wonders for you not only in your professional carrier but also in your personnel life. Ask for honest feedback, take it up and start growing.

Yes, getting feedback is very valuable to refine our message. Sometimes we are too excited about our products and services and focus in talking about the features and benefits without considering whether this is something that our clients need. I usually ask my colleague if he/she position themselves as the client what would be their responses after listening to my pitch

Story is more powerful than statement or data. People love to hear stories as they may relate especially when they have been in the similar situation. When we tell stories, we engage our emotions and their emotions. People will get connected with emotions. Once get connected, it’s easier to put some data or facts to support our story to convince the audience why they need to buy our products/services or become our partners
