In short, panic. You're in a downward spiral and need to reverse the momentum, and ASAP. Get on the phone. Be blunt with people. Tell them you're trying to reverse the slide by making your next event / fundraiser an even bigger success. Declining engagement isn't a red flag, it's a beach covered in red flags. Drop everything else, and start having conversations with your biggest donors, with prospects, with people in the street, with people on LinkedIn. Address any common themes. Anticipate some responses and have a good answer ready. This is an opportunity, over the next 30 days to one year, to turn things around and become the hero! Go get 'em.

I always start with preparation. Being intentional and on purpose about in depth research on each donor prospect. What are their giving patterns? What appears to be their philanthropic passion? How are they engaging their time and talent in the community or with organizations. In a nutshell, if you have done the homework you are meeting your donors and prospective donors where they have passion and purposeful investment. This positions you to offer a gift opportunity that resonates deeply with them. You must also offer ongoing stewardship as today's donors what engagement beyond just a monetary gift.

Cultivation time for a large, gen-ops gift can be 6-24 months and most organizations haven't done the proper pipeline work to ATTRACT that type of donor or stomach that schedule. When your fundraisers are properly trained, they rarely have failed engagement strateiges because they know how to lead donors to their best gift on an annual basis.

Through our interventions and messages, we may attract donors who are in the same space and get us into a dialogue for future collaboration and partnership.
