Recently, i worked on workflow of a defect and different phases in its life cycle. On analysis and discussion with the team, I found out that nobody had a good understanding of the whole workflow. People new bits and pieces and what they were supposed to do when the defect came to them in a particular state. I ended up simplifying the workflow from 12 states to 7 states, thereby reducing the complexity as well as improving the speed of closing the defect. The essence is that systems tend to grow complex over a period of time and we should pause and ponder at times to reassess their working and evaluate ways to simplify them.
