What do you do if your database development project fails and you're feeling discouraged?

Throughout our professional lives, we know that challenges and obstacles will inevitably arise. While success is the ultimate goal, failure is a natural part of the learning journey. Facing failure in a database development project or any other can be daunting, but it is important to remember that we are not defined by it, in my personal experience I have never seen a project that meets 100% of the original requirements or scope planned in the initial plan, so after remembering this I take a new approach to the problem and visualize the objectives that we did achieve and if it is possible to renegotiate or rethink the strategy for the scope of those that had not been achieved.

Suelo tomar un descanso para despejar mi mente y poder evaluar la situación de manera más objetiva. Luego reviso detenidamente lo que salió mal para identificar las posibles causas de la falla y aprender de mis errores. Finalmente, me enfoco en fijar metas realistas y alcanzables para poder retomar el proyecto con un enfoque renovado y más determinación.

Primero que todo reflexionar y analizar qué está fallando, se puede mejorar? será que deber normalizar o desnormalizar, habrá que mejorar el rendimiento, incluir índices en algunas tablas, etc. Según mi experiencia en general los proyectos de modelamiento de BD fallan por rendimiento y no hay nada que un experto en tuning no pueda corregir en una BD.

O primeiro passo parar, refletir sobre qual o conhecimento que lhe falta. Estudar, ouvir os especialistas mais experientes. Analisar a estrutura criada e aprender com os erros. Essa é uma profiss?o de que exige a busca do conhecimento constante e também de persistência.

First I take a breath and start analyzing my personal weaknesses and then those of my team and taking note of what happened so as not to repeat it in future occasions, as I said this is a learning path and we will always have better results while we have more experience in our staff, because I have never had in my personal experience that 100% of the goals are achieved in a timely manner, so I take it as the best way to learn.

Feedback is important, but only if its qualified. I'm sure you've been in numerous situations of classical "The website is down" emergency , only to find out that the user reporting the issue was not connected to the internet. Collect symptoms from users, but actual input from engineers.

Plan is always good, even if its not a perfect one. The best plan is to be ready to re-pivot at any point as new information becomes available. Do keep a list of what you tried and what the outcome was. Its very easy to keep trying the same thing expecting different results.

Support is certainly useful when it comes to having qualified hands on keyboards and/or an expert opinion. Not least important, when problem becomes a multi day war-room level of issue, make sure your staff rotates in shifts so they can recover. Mentally demanding tasks like problem solving under pressure can drain entire team a day. So ensure people are getting some sleep.
