What do you do if your data visualization project is causing conflicts due to ineffective communication?

Talking about personas, consumers, and data sources can’t come soon enough. Often replicating or providing what the client wants is going to require specific data modeling and that discussion has huge consequences if not done early on.

Clearly define the objectives of the project and the scope of the visualization. Make sure all stakeholders understand the goals and expectations.

Understand the data, the question you are trying to answer using that data, and the audience who will consume the insights. The type of audience will help drive your data preparation and presentation approaches.

Select tools and methods that facilitate effective communication and collaboration. This might include data visualization software, communication platforms, and project management tools.

Consider existing licenses. Many organizations especially if using Outlook, already have Enterprise licenses for Power BI. Then the product integrates nicely across the organization.

Adhere to best practices in data visualization design to ensure clarity and effectiveness. This includes choosing appropriate chart types, organizing data effectively, and using color and labeling judiciously.

New data analysts often do not spend enough time looking at the use cases and understanding the user arc. Effectively, not understanding the user arc is consummate with a messy teenagers’ bedroom. Everything is there, but you can’t see the floor!

I disagree that this is important. Agile requires minimal documentation. If you have designed the data correctly and it needs to be reused, the dataset or enrichments should already be able to be picked up by citizen developers. If you’ve gotten to this stage and are now considering the consequences, it’s too late.

Let's consider that this visualization project is a front-end, user-facing, presentation layer e.g., a dashboard, report, or detailed alert. You will need an Overview Page to give your users the context they need to make informed decisions and drive real impact. It should include: - the data's purpose and pedigree - the data's coverage (juice for the squeeze) - whom the viz is for, tailored to the target audience by outlining the key questions they need answered and the actions enabled to achieve outcomes - highlight what the viz does NOT do - add a FAQ section to address common questions upfront and avoid confusion - add a How this Works section for what matters

To mend communication gaps in your data visualization project, address both clarity and transparency. First, hold meetings to define project goals, target audience, and address concerns. Create early mockups to gather feedback and ensure alignment. Second, keep stakeholders informed with regular updates and explain design choices. Shift the focus from just presenting data to explaining its significance, fostering trust and a collaborative environment.
