What do you do if your credibility and trust are questioned in the product development industry?

Credibility and trust are built on your record. If you have issues here it may be due to a failure to deliver or making promises that either failed to materialize are are difficult to believe. If you've had failures in my experience it is important to own them and be open about what you would do differently going forward. This requires understanding your customer's perspective, even if you disagree, as well as understanding how competitors have managed in their developments. In some cases the root cause was a misalignment of expectations from the start of a development, so making sure everyone is on the same page at the start is critical.

Gaining background on the specifics is key, and then go to the core root causes via the 3 why's. This all starts with effective listening and holding back your initial thought's until you've had time to reflect and define the best of three approach's forward.

Gather feedback from stakeholders and internal team members to gain insights into the extent of the problem.

Most fundamental step. Doubts and suspicions may arise due to mis perception and a straight communication resolves all such issues

Initiate open and transparent dialogue with stakeholders to address their concerns and clarify any misconceptions. Acknowledge the validity of their concerns and demonstrate a willingness to listen and understand their perspectives. Communicate openly about the steps you're taking to address the issues and rebuild trust.

Once, after a software update didn't go as planned, we immediately put together a detailed action plan. The steps included overhauling our development process and implementing stricter quality control measures. We also scheduled training sessions to ensure everyone was on the same page. Taking these specific actions not only fixed the immediate issues but also showed our commitment to improving long-term. It was a challenging time, but it ultimately led to better products and more trust from our people.

Talk less and do more. Mostly credibility is lost when one is not able to deliver the goods after creating a lot of hype. Actions speak louder than words.

Once the problem statement and attributes leading to questioned credibility and trust are defined, the next step is to define an improvement plan with predetermined timelines. Challenges may be attributed to me not understanding expectations or underperforming against those. There could be N number of reasons like high workload, not getting support from the team or even limited support etc. Identify such areas and design actions to rectify those.

Out of the 10+ skills that I noted from my interactions, I selected the top 3 which I was not good at as per my self assessment and put together a plan to work on them. These included volunteering for projects as well as responsibilities that exposed me to learn those skills. Eg. - I took part in doing QA of each feature for the next 3 months, which allowed me demonstrate my eye for detail, providing timely feedback, as well as allowed me to understand gaps in my product specifications and helped me write better PRFAQs/PRDs

Trust is a critical foundation for collaboration because even the best solutions or roadmaps can be derailed without it. Acknowledging the gap directly and earnestly meeting the stakeholders (whether you agree or not) is the first step to rebuild trust. Have an end goal in mind and drive conversations towards it such that stakeholders feel its their idea(s) or solution(s) to regain trust.

Rebuilding lost trust gradually is the only way thru a clear action plan, communication, and networking. Once people doubt your credibility you need to deliver better and faster results to regain the trust back.

Take proactive measures to rebuild trust with stakeholders through consistent and reliable actions. Demonstrate integrity, reliability, and accountability in all interactions and commitments. Communicate openly about progress and improvements made, and be transparent about any challenges or setbacks encountered along the way.

Credibility and Trust are great assets in Leadership culture which any sustainable and digital leader will not want lose but if that happens then rebuilding the strategies is the smart way to go which at the end of the will not only build but give improved quality assurance to bear.

This is the crucial step in building credibility and trust. Believe me it takes time. As I mentioned above it is only built over time with a proven track record. Keep all stakeholders updated about the progress against the plan already agreed. Ask for support when required to meet the deadlines. Understanding that I cannot do everything by my own can make you vulnerable and share your weakness with stakeholders while seeking help to keep the development on track. Identifying risks and sharing mitigation plans will help build the confidence in stakeholders and teams.

Seek support and guidance from your professional network, including mentors, peers, and industry experts. Lean on trusted relationships to gain valuable insights, advice, and perspective on how to navigate credibility and trust challenges effectively. Every product development cycle has something to offer as learnings. Reflections on what went well and what not so great helps me avoid similar actions/behaviours at the next instance. Hence, learning from bad experiences and capitalising on good experiences helps shape up better identity though delivering superior results.

As you face challenges in product development and credibility, it's helpful to keep a wider context in mind. Industry trends can significantly shape user expectations of your products; keeping an eye on these trends and incorporating relevant insights can help keep you on top of things. Incorporating these wider considerations as part of your strategy not only strengthens products but also allows teams to innovate faster and respond to challenges effectively - with a lot fewer surprises!

In my experience, questions on credibility and trust can also be a symptom of larger problem: key stakeholders not understanding or aligning with your product's value proposition. Consider the scenario where you're the perfect product manager to your development team. Requirements are clear. Roadmap is defined. Vision is set. But now consider your end users don't resonate with your vision. That then means your roadmap may be unjustified and thus your requirements a moot point; e.g. you're at risk of building something that no one was looking for. Value proposition is a critical factor in this question. If your stakeholders don't understand the what or why of what you do, the less credible or trustworthy they may find you over time.

A mix-match of all the various options listed above but I will add a co-creation session, where all critical stakeholders are invited to not just give their feedback on the reasons behind the mistrust but they also get to be involved in designing the solution to avoid such in the future. That way, it becomes a 'win' or 'loss' for all

If the customers have a loss due their dissatisfaction of your product it will be a good gesture to make good the loss in one go or gradually. Building trust is not easy maintaining is still far difficult.
