What do you do if your creative vision clashes with technical limitations in Virtual Reality (VR)?

One thing I've experienced over the last 5 years is that creative vision will naturally overcome technical limitations. Because there is always a technical workaround. First thing to do is to step back and not imposing limits on the creative vision. Then use UX experts that will help you identify the technical workaround(s). Also, technology is moving really fast in the VR industry, and there are high chances that the technical limitations won't last long. Finally, if the gap between the creative vision and the technical limitations is too wide to overcome with a workaround, list all the barriers, prioritize your needs and break down all the limitations to identify solutions.

Start by thoroughly understanding the technical boundaries you're working within. Knowing what your VR platform can and can’t do is crucial. Sometimes, the limits aren’t as strict as they seem, and knowing the details might open up new creative avenues you hadn’t considered.

Recognize the need to modify your initial vision to fit within existing technological boundaries. This adaptation is crucial for crafting a viable VR experience that still captivates your audience.

To adjust expectations an effort should be done on both sides: Creative and technical. By expérience, I know that some creative things seems infaisable at first, and become doable after some tests. We can bend slightly the technical constraints to embrace a creative vision. On the other hand the creative should know the limits - And when something is definitely not doable, good creatives finds another way around to convey their ideas within the limitations. That's how I could recognize talented créatives, those who have a huge agility.

In my practice over the years, I have come to work with people who have unrealistic expectations and complete lack of technical understanding of what is possible in VR. And that is ok. We all started this way. Blame it on the wild media hype and move on. :P Adjust your vision to match your budget, your team size and expertise, and technological reality.

In a VRChat project called Oxymore, we've demonstrated that a low-poly experience can be both enjoyable and graphically smooth, even within the constraints of platform limitations. Due to the storage restriction of 200MB for Quest worlds, we designed the experience to simulate an open world. However, instead of allowing free movement throughout a large space, we cleverly teleported players between small, distinct zones for each track. This approach not only adhered to the file size limits but also enabled us to creatively overcome these restrictions and deliver a unique experience.

This is a situation that happens very often with customers: they would like to do things in VR that the technology still doesn't allow. The trick is to offer them something that obtains a similar goal but that is possible to do. This often requires compromises and finding creative solutions, but if the team has the right experience, it can do that. There is no teachable way on how to find these creative solutions: it is something that comes with experience in the sector. I can say that something that helps a lot is trying a lot of VR experiences that other people are doing, so that you can learn what solutions other people have found and you can take inspiration from that when you need to do something in VR, too.

Use limitations as a springboard for creativity. Explore alternative artistic styles or interaction designs that remain light on processing demands but deliver memorable user experiences. Sometimes, less is more, and simplicity can lead to clarity and impact.

That really is dependent on the experience of the team. Many people despair early on, many keep banging their head on the proverbial wall trying to shoehorn their imagination to a non accommodating technical reality. A lot of time and energy is wasted there. The truth is, behind the most amazing things you see in other people's work, there's a lot of smoke and mirrors. It might sound cliche, but think outside the box. You may come to realize the box should not even be there to begin with. Cheating creatively to achieve your goals is on the menu, breakfast lunch and dinner. Smoke does not need to be volumetrics. The flag does not necessarily need a complex cloth solution and your streets do not need to be filled with thousands of people.

Broaden your network to include VR specialists who bring different perspectives and solutions. This diversity can lead to innovative problem-solving, helping you navigate technical challenges more effectively.

Tackle your project in stages. Initial prototypes should focus on core functionalities, expanding complexity as you refine the concept and technology evolves. This approach allows for agility and continual improvement.

Take it one step at a time. Build your project in stages and test each part as you go. This way, you can identify and address issues without being overwhelmed by a mountain of them at the end.

Many who come from other fields fail to grasp the process of creating RT3D experiences such as VR. And that is ok. Not accepting it can have a negative impact on team morale. Start small, prioritize, and build up the quality where it matters. Where you need the visual impact most. With every new major addition, test for performance, test for scale, and in general test often and from early on at each major step to avoid a massive letdown after months of hard work. Polishing the look and feel is at the final stage, and apart perhaps from an early small sample to explore and determine your pipeline and workflows, do not expect to see anything looking amazing from the very first steps. You are progressively iterating towards amazing.

Maintain a proactive stance on VR developments. Anticipating future trends and technologies can help you prepare your projects for easy updates, ensuring they remain relevant and take advantage of new capabilities as they arise.

Use your current experience as a learning opportunity for future projects. Document what worked and what didn’t, and use this knowledge to plan better and more efficiently next time.

This is perhaps the one aspect most related to experience. But also budget. With a tiny budget you cannot afford to build much for the future. You often need to be quick and dirty. But even then, there are ways to add value to your future endeavors by optimizing and overall improving your pipeline, identifying your team's weakness, and creating content and tools that you could reuse. Design experiences that could easily be expanded or modified, or even ported to a different platform. But the most valuable thing of all, make sure your levels and code are easy to maintain and update. You do not want to have to redo weeks of work after that project is out of the door just to fix a small issue.

It's always best to start any VR project with the widest possible vision, while keeping the lowest common (technical) denominator in mind, so you minimize the risks of not being able to achieve your goal. Because when your vision for XR clashes with the limitations of the technology, it's probably due to the fact your didn't challenge your vision or your brief in the first place. Then, there will be a lot of out-of-the-box thinking to do in order to find alternatives or other ways to fix the situation and achieve the original objectives.

Taking the first step in VR can be daunting, but the potential for innovation and impact is immense. Even if the journey begins with challenges, the integration of new technologies can transform educational experiences, making the initial hurdles well worth overcoming.

This is a very common problem, and your success in VR may depend a lot on how much you are able to deliver a very good experience notwithstanding the current limitations of the technology.

This happens alot of time when technical limitations clashes with creative vision, but to solve this clash you have to see what things can be achieved with the available technology and make things ready and noted for the complete vision once technology gives you opportunity you can integrate it and complete the vision.
