Often times conflict in the workplace is a result of a lack of effective communication. Communication should flow from top to bottom as well a from bottom to top. Organizations should invest in effective communication training for their employees to help mitigate this

Safety guidelines or policies help control workers that tend to stray out to the laid down rules and regulations. When properly interpreted and discussed with the work force it brings the workers to the understanding that safety if workers is a major concern of management not just the sole responsibility of safety officers or department.

One thing I have found with policies and procedures. Is this must apply to all, treat everyone Equally, I have seen in many situations, in every roll I have been in, being bias towards anyone who are not liked, these people are thrown the book at every time, where as some can do the same and get away without hitting trigger policies/procedures. Managers and leaders must enforce this to all for a balanced workforce.

Just remember that you can not have a policy for every situation. Organizations should empower their employees to provide input to update policies and to make risk decisions without fear of reprisal if they made a decision that was in the best interest of safety and the protection of personnel even if it strayed from policy.

I totally agree here, HR advice is second to none. Always seek and present what you are looking to achieve from the situation as they are there to support at all times.

If everyone is at risk the manager must seek support from the management to deactivate the conflict. Normally we try to solve small conflicts as fast as possible, simply because keeping a healthy and stable place to work is really the most important.

Health and Safety is not a one man work! It requires all levels of the organization working together for the common good. When people are in conflict main health, safety and security team is just in reactive scenario of which the outcome of the problem was only hand overed to them. The root cause of the problem may come from the operations or in the lapses on the human resource intervention of which should always be proactive and thus should be an input to their risk regiater and mitigation should always be monitored and assess in regular intetvals.

The book "The Bully in the Workplace" is insightful and helpful on this mostly ignored but common problem. Often the aggressive responses and behaviors are driven by anger towards someone else (partner, parent, child, landlord, boss, etc.) they "can't" express that anger at so blowing up at a far less threatening co-worker is their venting. That explains over-reaction on their part (and it may well be you as well as them.) A good counselor can figure that out and that may be covered under the employer's health insurance (especially "Employee Assistance Program/EAP coverage.) Anger Management courses can help a lot in defusing conflict just personal insults using profanity inflame reactions and can escalate to violence.
