In order to develop that understanding, start making process maps if how you think things work and then go and speak to your colleagues and see how the reality stacks up. Once you know what's happening in practice, start following the data through the systems and see how different scenarios reflect within the data

Indeed, one should review his or her skills in the context of one’s annual performance reviews in the current job. Focus on the gaps and establish a skill development plan —academic or on the job learning. One can always change the current job but in that case, one will be taking new risks.

In my experience, taking on a new job or role in a sector or industry you have never worked in before is a terrific way to test and sharpen your skills and broaden your areas of expertise in finance. I did that several times in my career and it has helped me be subjected to different problem solving environments. The key thing is to choose a role where your current skills could be immediately relevant but where there are big opportunities to learn. As I have learned more from challenging than from stable situations I can personally attest to the value of such a move when you’re feeling stuck in a rut
