In one sentence, it is allocating your money in a way where top down strategic objectives (OKRs) and bottom’s up practical needs have fine balance. Planning plays a vital role. It is not only Plan A but there has to be a Plan B as well in Budgeting. Creating a budget is not very simple, capturing the right content, estimating the values and then being mindful of what the future can bring across will have an impact on total budgeting. The future calculation completely depends on market trends today, what's in and what can be out. However, over calculation should always be avoided. A very popular saying "Future is unpredictable, be ready to face it, but be prepared to mend your plans when uncertainty suddenly hits".

Clearly define what you want to achieve. For example, instead of saying “I want to save money,” specify “I want to save $5,000 for an emergency fund. Goals, what can I say about goals that has not been said already. The most important thing in my view of goals is to stick with them. To often people set goals that they do not see through. Just as in everyone's personal life business goals are the same. Goals need to be realistic but also achievable. To often businesses fail as a result of setting the wrong goals which can't be achieved which results in failures and the doors close. Sometimes Managers sets goals that can be easily achieved just so that it appears as if they are performing well. Goals is not necessarily easy but your specific business model should talk to it and should consist of short term and long term goals.

Ensure Data Quality, for example Accuracy: Verify the accuracy of the data by cross-checking with multiple sources. Consistency: Ensure that the data is consistent over time and across different sources. Completeness: Make sure that all relevant data is included and that there are no gaps.

As you grow you will need the flexibility to run more "what-if" based scenario models, predictive models and rolling forecasts. This will be even more obvious if you wish to budget based on geography, subsidiary, department, product, service, etc. Plan ahead and understand which software you may look to use, and budget plenty of time for design, implementation, dashboard design and education of stakeholders. Remember, you can have the best, most advanced budgeting software, but if you don't train your staff in how to use it and also, more importantly, why they should use it, it is worth zero.
