I was in the path of a strategy shift at one point in my career. The chairman wanted to replace leadership positions with younger ones. This agenda was not explicit but most of us we given a heads up. The options for me were retire, relocate, or transform. I chose to transform.

Upskill: Acquire new skills and knowledge pertinent to the strategic directions of the organization. Communicate: Express your career aspirations to management and how you can contribute to the new strategy. Network Internally: Build relationships across different departments to understand new dynamics and find allies.

Businesses are fluid and variables continue to change each day. Keep up to date on your company through all-hands meetings, asking questions during your team meetings, listening to (or reading) earnings calls, and reading industry articles about your company. Listen to how your competitors and customers talk about your company. Being able to synthesize multiple streams of information and coming up with your own point of view about your company will often lead to your perspective on what needs to change strategically.

From heads-up to execution was to be quick so I quickly confronted helpful contacts with the fact that I knew what was coming. Having chosen transform, I laid foundations for transformation among a few influential and respected colleagues who could keep me informed as a back channel to deciders.

Conversations with people within and outside the organization almost unanimously suggested consulting and/or teaching. Well before I was given notice, I had a new job as founding executive of a technology startup. I reached out to consultants in that new field, who I had contracted in the past to hear what they had to say about my ability and development needs.

If you've determined a shift in strategy is imminent, determine how you can up-level or promote skills that will become invaluable to the new strategy. Take note colleagues at the company and externally who have an expertise in the given strategy and evaluate how to attain those skills. Online courses, youtube, linkedin, among others are great places to start building on your existing skills.

One thing that has served me well is continually being curious and meeting with anybody/everybody along the way. You never know when you will learn something new about a person, a role, a department, or a company. Be open to meeting with people higher up in the company as well as those doing day to day work as new members of the company. This is less about asking for favors or going to somebody only when you need something. This is about establishing connections and continually learning.

Don't accept fate, make your own. If a change in strategic direction isn't something you are aligned with or believe you're able to be successful with, explore the market. Even if you end up staying within a certain company or role, exploring your market value and talking to new people with different perspectives will help you round out what's important to you.

Many people, even those who teach and coach on adaptability fail to prepare an ecosystem of adaptation support. Build a network within and outside your organization based on continuous learning and helping each other. Apply adaptive self-leadership.

Stay adaptable, stay informed, and delve into opportunities that could guide you through transformations. Maintain transparent dialogue with your superiors, share your thoughts, and seek guidance that can assist you in the process of discarding old notions and acquiring new insights. Being receptive to change and readiness to enhance your skills will aid in overcoming the roadblocks and emerge as a resource of even greater value for the company. AGILITY is the KEY!
