What do you do if your boss steals your credit?

Si mi jefe robara alguna de mis ideas, por una parte me sentiría alagada pues eso quiere decir que mi trabajo tiene mucho que aportar, siempre pondría el diálogo antes de pensar en el doble objetivo de querer robar la idea, el diálogo puede aclarar dudas, poner sobre la mesa puntos importantes y para mí, lo más importante es poner límites, esto siempre hará que mis ideas sean respestadas

If I get to know about this through someone else, I would need to double check again first to avoid a terrible mess. If I myself directly know my boss claims my work as his/her own, I would come to him/her and have a face-to-face talk to understand why it happened. I've done mistakes in the past where I confronted people with poor anger management so I learnt and will try to keep calm while investigating on the background of such incident. If it is just a misunderstanding, we can get things cleared and find a sensible way to correct it with others. If my boss disowns my contribution/emotion or shows a lack of respect then I will consider to quit. For me, a long-term work relationship must always be based on mutual respect and fairness.

Ensure you don't solely rely on sharing your ideas with your boss; it's essential to also communicate them with your team and others. This way, if your idea spreads throughout the organization via your boss, everyone will know you originated it. Be forthright and unhesitant in asserting your authorship. If your boss does this, refrain from sharing the solutions and efforts being made, as it could inadvertently attribute the idea to someone else. Here's how we address this in my workplace: Whenever a team member proposes an idea, we document it along with their name to ensure they feel acknowledged and empowered.

1. Think Goals. Why are you in the position? To enjoy this job? To learn? To get credit? Assess your own situation. 2. Think Currency. So your boss just got credit, a type of currency. Can you get anything in exchange since they received star status? 3. Think Choices. What choices might you have? Should you take one for the team? Should you evaluate your need for stardom? Should you stay or should you go? Remember you always have choices.

Try, even as a subordinate, to create a ONE ON ONE environment. Where you have honest conversations about people's perspectives. Also collect feedback on what is happening and move your network. Talk to people in the community to understand the market.

If it’s not available so you should raise the flag and create a tool to do so for all the sake of the employees credit. To avoid feeling that the credit is not yours in any upcoming situation.

I like this question. For my boss to “steal credit” it means he/she is dealing with an identity issue or I am for thinking that credit can be stolen. If I feel I should be recognized for something but my boss didn’t provide acknowledgment, I would ask some clarifying questions. I.e. What did the project contributions look like for you? What does collaboration mean to you? How do you do recognition and how would you like to be recognized? Was there ever a time you participated in something and didn’t get recognition or acknowledgment for your participation? If so, how did you feel and what would you have liked done? Simply asking these clarifiers is enough to set the momentum on rectifying the situation.

Make it clear that you have your own boundaries regarding the work you do in a very respectful way, sometimes you will need to escalate it to the manager but not every time.

With good records, chances are you will find yourself in a position where you will need to demonstrate your knowledge and how you came up with the idea. Bosses tend to do that unintentionally in a way to brief stakeholders of all aspects of their team performance and achievements. My advice is to have faith in the process, document your efforts and work, and your time to shine will eventually come. If we are dealing with a machiavellian manager however, a confrontation will be necessary in order to set limits and expectations of what is acceptable and what’s not.

We're all out here grinding, putting in the hours, and making things happen. But let me tell you something — none of that matters if you can't prove it. You need receipts. Keep a record of every move you make, every idea you hatch, and every success you notch. Emails, reports, metrics — whatever it takes to show your fingerprints on the game. Because when it's time to stand up and claim your due, you better have more than just words. Show them the evidence and make them see your impact. Sometimes bosses have reasons. If definitely not, and you have proof, find other people in the company that could help you.

It is very important for you to have relationships within your company. We often do not share values with our leaders, it is also important to see if we share values with our employer and also evaluate what happens outside the market. When you have this connection network within the company, other areas and the market, you will be better equipped to solve personal problems.

I think no one can steal the credit. If you have worked hard on something it'll benefit you only as a professional. Someone else taking the credit of your work should not bother the professionals with achievers mindset. As you'll definitely reach your destination sooner or later.

Actually I believe a real leader, would never steal your credit, the opposite, he will make very clear that the accomplishment was your merit or at least a Team work job. If your “boss” steal your credit, maybe is your time to check if you are on the right place and make your own conclusions.

Praise him/her for the great work as people will notice soon or later that this work is coming from you. “Leaders” that steal from others are very well known in companies. So keep cool and eat some popcorn ??
