What do you do if your boss hinders your professional growth?

Talk to him as to what you feel like and what he expects out of you. If he is right, correct your course. If he is biased and jealous or sounds least bothered, Start your own venture !!! Grow bigger than him and ask him if he wants a job ! There is no better revenge than Success.

It's often difficult to assess our own situation as well as we assess problems and markets in Product Management. You'll need an accurate assessment of how much of the issue is you and how much of the problem is due to your boss. After gaining an understanding of the problem and mapping out potential remedies, you should take a step back and calculate and ROI on making the fix. In some cases you'll have a higher return on your efforts by taking a new job where you're more likely to grow. You shouldn't avoid hard things, but you should look at the potential upside of each available option.

The term "BOSS" is outdated; as Product Managers, we seek "LEADERS." I would open dialogue and be very open to insights/feedback. Then, I would provide context and show why I'm choosing determined paths and how my product vision is aligned with the company goals and KPIs. Bring data to support your product plan. If the company is data-driven, you have good relationships, you are reaching all the results, and you are very transparent with your team and leader, there is no reason your direct leader would be unhappy. If I failed at something, I would improve my skills to learn fast and grow. If you have a "BOSS" who is untouchable and does not align with the company culture, value yourself, your health and seek other opportunities.

After pinpointing the issues, engage in a constructive conversation with your boss. Focus on your growth and how you can better contribute to the team. Steer clear of accusatory tones; calmly express your concerns and suggest ways for better support. Your boss might be unaware of their actions' effects, so this open, honest dialogue could foster positive changes.

Instead of attacking your boss’ character, explain how you can be a more effective team player and ask for opinions on the same. This approach avoids confrontation while allowing the identification and resolution of the root problems which might lead to improved interpersonal relations within the work environment.

That open dialogue is important - even when it might feel like talking to a wall sometimes. If my boss hinders my professional growth as a program manager, I would first seek to understand the reasons behind their actions by having an open and honest conversation. I would respectfully communicate my goals and aspirations, highlighting how their support can contribute to achieving mutual success. Something else is that I would also actively keep track of my achievements and contributions to showcase my value and readiness for new challenges or roles within or outside the organization if necessary. You can do this in a weekly google doc or notion board. It’s great for self confidence too to know that you’re continuously adding value.

Request regular feedback from your boss on your performance and areas for development. This demonstrates your commitment to growth and may help foster a more supportive relationship. You can use your objectives to discuss your growth and document the updates in the Performance tools.

Unfortunately many times managers block someone's growth due to their own insecurities and fears. Specially if the boss has inorganically grown into the role, it's threatening for them to manage high potential and quality employees because they are then put on spot and that would expose and negatively impact their image. Finding a mentor outside of the company who can contribute to your growth and keep you motivated until you find the next gig becomes important in such scenarios.

A mentor can offer guidance, support, and advocacy, giving you an outside perspective on your situation and advice on navigating office dynamics. While every situation is unique, seeking mentorship outside direct channels can be a game-changer. When my boss couldn't provide the guidance I needed, I turned to an external career coach. Not only did this fill the mentorship gap, but it also improved my relationship with my boss. It's essential to recognize that not all bosses excel at nurturing talent. Don't let it hinder your growth—seek mentorship elsewhere

This situation can arise any time. Its not just your manager, it can come from anywhere. I always assessed the situation. Found the various techniques to solve it. the best one worked is seeking Mentorship. I found seniors in the area where I want to grow. Had monthly Mentorship sessions with them. This helped to get ideas and execute them in my job so that I am promoted. They used to give me contextual based tips so that they are just right for the situation.

If you end up in such setup (I've been there myself), it's crucial to strengthen your skillset and expertise outside of company. That helps you stay marketable and eventually enables you to find the next gig.

While addressing workplace challenges, actively enhance your skills in product management. Engage in workshops, online courses, and conferences to stay abreast of the latest methods and tools. This commitment to continuous learning not only boosts your expertise but also showcases your dedication to growth, potentially opening new opportunities and demonstrating your value and adaptability in your field.

Take ownership of your professional development by seeking out learning opportunities, volunteering for challenging projects, and actively seeking feedback from colleagues and peers. Leverage Linkedin to connect with folks who would be able to help with the growth.

To expand your professional skillset, take initiative and research online courses, attend industry conferences, or explore certifications related to product management. Connect with other product managers and industry professionals online to expose yourself to different perspectives and ideas. Become an internal knowledge source by taking the lead on new projects or initiatives, volunteering to tackle challenging tasks, and focusing on what you can control. By actively expanding your skillset, you will become a more valuable product manager and recognized eventually. Remember, your professional growth doesn't solely depend on your boss.

I had been into a similar kind of situation in one of my previous organisations. The only thing that I focused on was learning outside my organization. So think that I was working for around 10-12 hours a day and even leaving some personal time for me, I managed to learn, up-skill and up my game to leave that organisation and get myself to the best place where I would be able to learn and grow even while working. So, in order to do this, the first thing which I did was prepare a schedule, and abide strictly by that. And then, I laid out a few courses or learning steps for me. These helped me to track, focus and work on only those topics relevant to get me a better opportunity and help me up my game.

Many times, a manager does not change (because people are hard to change), and due to the power imbalance, you cannot influence them either. In my experience, the best approach is to seek opportunities in other teams or companies. Don't waste your energy and time fighting a battle that you won't win anyway.

If your growth remains stunted despite your efforts, consider exploring new opportunities either within your organization or elsewhere. Seek teams or projects that resonate with your career aspirations and where you can leverage your product management skills. A change in environment can be pivotal in discovering roles that align with your ambitions, offering the right conditions for your professional development and success.

I always give 2 chances as I believe growing in the known and existing org or team is much faster. As it provides you with advantage of knowing key information to performance well hence growing faster. If those to tries aren't working then I have gone aggressing to find out alternative green areas. They can be within the org or outside. Outside the org has given good breaks. It has helped me to take many challenges hence leading to best growth. The upskill and skill expansion has helped to achieve the growth.

If direct talk fails, then you have to strategically plan for your growth. You may also want to seek mentorship within or outside the organization to expose yourself to new ideas and skills. Opportunities for professional development, including workshops or online courses, can expand your knowledge base. In addition, a wider network can offer fresh perspectives and opportunities that will possibly open new doors leading to a position that is better aligned with your career aspirations.

Keep a record of your accomplishments and contributions to the organization. This can serve as evidence of your value and may help in future discussions about career advancement.

Strategy over my carrier and planning for next 5 years has helped me. I always ask What am I going to be in next 5 years? This has helped me to shape the strategy and put the plan to execute it. Being prepared by up-skill and skill expansion has helped me a lot. I have used LinkedIn to identify my next skill and plan strategically to gain it.
