What do you do if your boss hinders your career growth?

One action that I have always practised to good effect when managing a boss/direct report relationship is this: Before you first begin to work together, have a conversation about: 1. What works/doesn't work for each of you 2. How do we give each other feedback on conflict or potential conflict, and 3. If we cannot reach an agreement on any issue, how should we break the 'deadlock' The reason why this approach is so effective is that at the start of a working relationship, there are no issues of conflict to contend with. Use that time to lay your cards on the table and build a positive working relationship

Additionally, document all interactions and instances where you feel your career growth is being hindered. This can be useful if you need to escalate the issue to higher management or HR. Stay positive and maintain a professional attitude, focusing on your long-term career goals. If the situation does not improve, be prepared to explore new opportunities where your contributions will be valued and your career can thrive.
