What do you do if your boss doesn't understand your career goals?

Never be so sure about what you want that you would not accept something better. That means speaking openly about longer-term goals. It may be that your boss knows a better way (meaning positions on the way) for you to reach your goals than what you thought you needed or should. Thus, if you look too short-term, your boss may not understand what the ultimate goal is.

In my professional journey, I've found that preparing a concise outline of my aspirations, along with the steps I envision to achieve them, helps bridge the communication gap. This clarity allows you to present your goals during discussions more effectively, ensuring that your boss can see the alignment between your professional growth and the organization’s needs. This approach fosters mutual understanding and can help you gain the support you need to advance your career.

I will go against the grain here. From my perspective, it is irrelevant if one's boss understands an employee's career goals. Hear me out lol. If an employer had to have on the forefront of their minds the short and long-term career goals of all of their employee's... I think they quite literally could have an aneurysm. Let's each stick in our own lanes. Employers need to source, hire, and train the right person for the job. They need to continue to monitor that they have the most suitable person for the role as well. Candidates need to take it upon themselves to source and attain positions that are in alignment with their own personal career goals. Simple.

Being a leader also means letting your team make mistakes along the way and not hanging them out to dry for trying new things. As a leader, you should always ask your team what their long term career goals are. This will help you motivate them for success. And make it clear that there are no wrong answers. Whether they want to be promoted within the company, increase their experience so they can go elsewhere, make more money or even eventually replace you - it doesn't matter. Make it clear that as long as they show up and do their job to the best of their ability, you will help them achieve their career goals. That may mean being a professional reference, moving them into a different role in the same company or even grooming them, to be your successor. This is the sign of a true leader.

Tuve un cliente que era un gran profesional, muy capaz y rápido, de una inteligencia mayor a la media. Como solicitaba un puesto mejor, le dieron muchas funciones, tantas, que no podía llegar a todo y ocurrió que su desempe?o bajó de improviso. ?Qué ocurrió? Lo mandaron a una filial como castigo.
