The question is if they are your boss already why are they interviewing you? Is this question generated by AI? Before we try to offer insight we must at least understand the scenario we’re supporting them with. Is the question referring to the hiring manager of a potential job? Or a current boss who’s interviewing their direct report for something new?

I acknowledge that is a tough question that I do want to answer it however I would like some additional time to think on that as I want to ensure I provide a accurate, detailed answer. I might need to do some research or review data and explain that during the response. I would rather provide a correct detailed answer than wing it!

Quite often I’ve sat in interviews and been asked some ridiculous questions. My answer to almost all of these is ‘… perhaps you can help me understand how my responses to this question are related to the role so that I might be better positioned to answer it?’ This usually does the trick and they move on. However, it’s also a red flag for me too. If I’m about to join a company with a hiring manager who asks these type of questions and expects an answer, to me it means that the hiring managers might be severely untrained to interview properly and/or have any understanding of behaviour-based and skill based interviewing best practices. In most cases where this has happened I’ve declined to proceed. Or I’ve been inclined to provide guidance.

Preparation is the key. An employer may not expect you to know everything about the job, but they will expect you to know about yourself. What motivates you, what are you passionate about, what are you good at? Know yourself. No one else is better qualified than you in that regard

You can sometimes prevent a tough question with preparation. Maybe try putting the job description in AI and ask what type of questions may be asked. Look at your own background and dissect it thinking about, what might you ask. Being prepared often times is all about having mini stories built around your experience and accomplishments.

I had an old boss ask the 2 questions we were told as college students were illegal. 1. "Why is your GPA so low?" and 2. "Why have you been in school for so long?". Sat back in my chair and took a deep breath. Then I leaned forward and said "Because I have multiple sclerosis and everytime I have a relapse I have to drop out and return the next semester to take the exact same classes. At which point I don't care about my grade anymore. I just want the information and data. But as I've been at this for so long I can also tell you I am one determined woman." Keeping calm and always positive in this type of situation is something that I always follow. Every question has answer and it depends up you who you handle the situation. If you don't know the answer you can admit that you are not aware about it. But immediately give assurance to the interviewer that you definitely read about it.

By staying calm & positive you can divert the questions/interview in a way you want to. Interviewers often ask or pick questions from your answers only. when you answer calmly, you give them the line of questions, you want them to ask you.

In my experience, I have always found it is best to be honest and not exaggerate your knowledge of the item being discussed. If you have worked with your boss for any length of time they no doubt have an idea of your knowledge and skills. Be open and let her/him know you are willing to learn new things and expand your knowledge.

There are always going to be tough days and questions, keep calm and just be yourself. The more communication the better the relationship.

It is often best to assume your boss is interested in your growth and development and not trying to 'catch you' or have a 'gotcha' moment. It's also fine to take a moment to formulate your answer before you give it. Take your time, formulate an answer that you know is honest and isn't confrontational, dismissive or argumentative.

Facing difficult questions during an interview with a boss requires active listening, analyzing not only the question but the purpose of it, thinking about the answer, rephrasing the question if greater clarity or additional information is needed, using vocabulary appropriate to the situation and the topic raised, providing examples if they help clarify the response and project self-confidence. Afterwards, ask for feedback, as it will help you to grow both professionally and personally.

Remember that interviews are not just about providing the right answers but also about demonstrating your ability to handle challenging situations with grace and professionalism. Hence its always recommended to ask for the feedbacks so that you can improve with an intent to know what was a miss or a hit, work on the miss and cherish your hit!

Personally always thank the interviewer for being shortlisted and interviewed. This is an opportunity to also assess yourself as to where to improve based on the questions asked. Me I would leave it there, the questions about room for improvement, leave that whey they give you the outcome of an interview.

Seek feedback from your boss after the interview to gain insights into areas where you can improve. Use the feedback to refine your skills and enhance your performance in future interviews. Follow up with a thank-you note expressing appreciation for the opportunity and reiterating your interest in the role.

Ask if they have any feedback on your performance. If they give you feedback, take it seriously and use it to improve. Maybe they'll tell you about areas where you did well and areas where you can do better. You can also ask how you can improve your chances for the job. Maybe they'll give you tips on what skills or experiences they're looking for.

Interviews can be stressful to say the least, so I've learnt to think of the interview as a conversation which helps to manage my anxiety. Additionally, I prepare talking points about specific areas that I need further clarification on. Having these talking points ready keeps me on track and shows that I'm not only prepared but eager to learn.

Why would you be in an interview with your boss? Perhaps this is an example of AI generated questions not quite landing in reality!? I would add that anchoring your answer in specific reality is a must IMO. I’ve been in way too many interviews when answers revolve around broad themes. Offering a specific example allows you to offer a STAR (Situation, Task, Action & Result) answer combined with the lessons learnt if you were to repeat.
