What do you do if your biotechnology research needs to reach a broader audience?

Science outreach is a must in research projects. Not only applied research, but basic scientific concepts should be explained in plain words and explained to a broad audience. Every lab should make an effort to communicate their science in any way they feel comfortable with.

I perform outreach at high schools by giving bi-annual presentations on biotechnology and biomedical research. In collaboration with their biology teachers I organize events at schools where parents are also invited. I also participate to conferences and science fairs to further expand public awareness using posters and lay language. I ultimately writing a book on the subject.

To reach a broader audience, we should breakdown scientific terms. Also, to make them understand why research is important. My PhD topic is “Benchtop NMR analysis of Illicit Drugs” Simplification eg. Imagine you're doing a project in school. Mine is about using a special tool called "Benchtop NMR" to study illegal drugs. It's like a smaller, cheaper version of a big NMR machine. This little tool can be used in small labs to analyse drugs. Sometimes, dealers mix drugs with other dangerous stuff. Scientists need same drug reference to compare when they do analysis. But this tool don't need that! So, why does all of this matter? Well, if we know what's in the drugs, we can make sure people don't get hurt by taking mixed drugs.

Conferences, papers, and presentations. The best way to reach the scientific community is through these channels. Fortunately, there are certain criteria to enter these circles, and as long as your project is technically strong, solves a problem, improves a process, and creates a positive impact, you will be welcomed. Different circles have varying criteria; however, the best way to display your work is by simply asking for advice, incorporating it, and presenting it back.

Public outreach is an important and often overlooked component of biomedical research and its advocacy. I frequently advise faculty and trainees to start with a small public event with a diverse audience and a clear topic focus. This helps an individual build confidence and establish their own effective communication style before engaging larger groups.

Social media can be a useful way to easily communicate your message with a wide group of individuals that wouldn't otherwise connect with you. In my experience, it is important to keep the message succinct and to the point of discussion.

In addition to creating content, actively engage with your audience by responding to comments, questions, and feedback. This interaction fosters a sense of community and demonstrates your commitment to transparency and accessibility. Consider collaborating with other researchers or experts in the biotechnology field to amplify your message and reach new audiences. Utilize analytics tools provided by social media platforms to track the effectiveness of your posts and refine your approach over time. By harnessing the full potential of social media, you can effectively expand the reach of your biotechnology research and cultivate meaningful connections with a diverse audience.

I found it very helpful to be a part of professional societies and attend their events and conferences. Peer groups and KOLs at these meeting are a great resource for advancing ideas and getting constructive feedback on projects.

Consider establishing partnerships with industry experts, government agencies, and non-profit organizations aligned with your research objectives. Collaborative projects and joint initiatives can leverage resources and expertise, facilitating greater outreach and impact. Seek out opportunities to contribute guest articles or interviews to reputable publications in both scientific and mainstream media outlets. By strategically positioning your research within established networks and publications, you can enhance credibility and attract attention from a wider audience, including policymakers, investors, and the general public.

Consider tailoring your press release to target specific media outlets that cater to your desired audience demographics. Include quotes from key researchers involved in the study to add credibility and human interest to the story. Provide access to supplementary materials such as high-resolution images, videos, or infographics to enhance the visual appeal of your press release. Follow up with journalists and editors to ensure they have all the information they need and offer yourself for interviews or further clarification. By strategically leveraging press releases, you can effectively leverage media coverage to extend the reach of your biotechnology research and spark interest among a diverse audience.

Consider partnering with educational institutions or online learning platforms to reach a wider audience base. Offer interactive elements within your educational content, such as quizzes or case studies, to enhance engagement and retention of key concepts. Incorporate real-world examples and practical applications to illustrate the relevance of your biotechnology research to everyday life. Additionally, encourage participants to share their newfound knowledge with others, thereby amplifying the impact of your educational efforts and fostering a culture of continuous learning within the biotechnology community.
