To inspect the welding gun, you should disconnect it from the power source and remove the nozzle, the contact tip, and the liner. Look for any signs of damage, corrosion, or dirt on these components, and clean or replace them as needed. You should also check the wire feed system and make sure that the wire is feeding smoothly and evenly.
The ground clamp is the part that connects the workpiece to the negative terminal of the welding machine. It ensures that the welding circuit is complete and that the current flows properly. If the ground clamp is dirty, loose, or damaged, it can cause poor welds, sparks, or overheating. To clean the ground clamp, you should disconnect it from the workpiece and the machine, and use a wire brush to remove any rust, dirt, or grease from the clamp and the cable. You should also tighten the clamp and make sure that it has a good contact with the workpiece.
Some welding machines have a cooling system that circulates water or coolant through the machine and the welding gun to prevent overheating. If the cooling system is not working properly, it can cause the machine or the gun to overheat and shut down. To test the cooling system, you should check the water level and the temperature in the reservoir, and make sure that there are no leaks or blockages in the hoses or the pump.
