What do you do if you want to turn your software engineering internship into a full-time job?

Before going beyond the tasks assigned to you, make sure that you finish the tasks assigned to you in a professional manner, and get written feedback about it. If you go through this cycle a few times, your manager's confidence in you will increase - and more often than not, you will be on boarded when you finish your internship

In addition to the hiring manager assessing various soft skills and the completion of assigned tasks during the internship, it's important to continue providing feedback on performance. Apart from the above, consider the following: 1) Evaluate how well the individual fits into your team (culture fit). 2) Take note of the intern's preferences and dislikes observed during their internship (identifying areas for team improvement). 3) Discuss the intern's career aspirations and determine if your organization can support their professional growth (aligning intern's growth with organizational opportunities).

Demonstrate commitment. As a student, your task is to learn and apply. Note down your incremental growth and present it to your manager periodically. Bridge the internship assignment with what your academics taught you. Convince the manager about your ability to learn rapidly and advance.

Take responsibility of the project given to you , show them that you are an independent worker and can deliver with quality . Be a sponge , learn as much as you can and apply the learnings in your work . Be open to feedback and criticism since this is the time for growth and improvement. Show them your passion and initiative and I am sure they would love to have you as a colleague.

Firstly: The whole idea of unpaid internships is something we, as an industry, should oppose. Paying people for work is how it should work, particularly with cost of housing.. Because without it, internships become a form of cronyism/exclude all but those with rich parents (which naturally excludes many talented/smart people). As for PAID interns showing initiative, I'd suggest seeking out help when you don't know something is the most essential form of "showing initiative". Sitting there roadblocked is not a good sign. Looking for little, practical ways to improve things is the next thing I'd look for.

To work and bring together all the theoretical knowledge acquired during my higher education, applying it to best practices, software architecture, system modelling, and the use of development tools aimed at the core activity of my professional career.

Advanced advice for promising interns: 1. Look for opportunities to do crap jobs no one wants. People usually leave you alone to do it your way. If successful, you’re a hero. If criticized, ask if they want to do it. If you need to walk away, folks are quick to understand. The experience will give you insights to valuable solutions and products. 5. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness or stupidity. It is expected for growth. Try to solve the problem on your own so you can talk intelligently about it, then ask for help and when you do listen. Don’t come back with the same question. Don’t treat people as Google. 6. Failure and mistakes are ok, if they are learning experiences. Just own them, fix them quickly. Never hide them.

Internships provide opportunities to find mutually benefiting matches between culture and talent. For me, demonstrating the ability to handle new challenges is more important than one's current skill set.

One thing that helps is gaining knowledge in business domain in the given opportunity. While tech skills cam be acquired elsewhere in schools or training centers, business skills are acquired on the job. An inter who shows interest and exhibits his domain knowledge is considered valuable particularly by higher management and even customers

Feedback is not something that should be exclusively sought at the end of a project. e.g., “How did I do?” But rather, at some point during the activity. e.g., “How am I doing?” That feedback will allow for real-time course corrections, allowing you to compensate for steer out of the way of trouble spots, as well as realign your efforts with corporate expectations. This greatly increases the probability and quality of success, especially since you have external confirmation you are solving the right problem in the right way (and with the right attitude). This proactiveness and team engagement also tends to make your final evaluation outcome much more positive.

One thing that is important is to let your manager know your intentions in advance. There might not be a position open but if you let them know and they find value your work, they might work toward it.

Internships are a win-win opportunity for both parties. The practitioner learns about the real challenges in given tasks, which are often far from the theory learned, and take that challenges to school. On the other hand, the employer can identify valuable people for subsequent hiring, while at the same time training them and knowing their work style. At the end of the internship, both can decide if they continue their relationship or each person takes their own direction.
