What do you do if you want to transition into Investment Banking and need networking advice?

"Know your target" in transitioning to Investment Banking means understanding the industry thoroughly. Research investment banks, their culture, services, and recent deals. Know the roles within IB and the skills required. Identify your strengths and how they align with IB. Network extensively: connect with professionals via LinkedIn, attend industry events, and seek informational interviews. Tailor your approach to each contact, showcasing your interest and skills. Be proactive and persistent in building relationships.

Start with a target list of firms. Do you want to work for a bulge bracket, elite boutique, or middle market firm? Then, for each firm, start creating a list of contacts you want to reach out to. Start from the warmest contacts and work your way down to the coldest. This means starting from your personal network (family and friends, friends of friends), then asking those people for intros to other people. You can also reach out to school alumni (everyone does this, it's low hanging fruit), as well as people in the same affinity groups as you. You can also reach out to recruiters at the firm and ask them to introduce you to bankers that fit certain criteria. Last but not least, you can use Linkedin to find cold contacts to reach out to.

I transitioned from Accounting to Investment banking in 2021. Here was what helped me: I engaged a career coach. Her guidance was so helpful. As a bonus, she has a wide network. She introduced me to a couple of people in the Investment Banking industry. Before then, I knew none on a personal level. I bagged interviews with 2 of the contacts she introduced me to. Got an offer from one. This made it easier than me sending cold messages.

Persistence and resilience are key in networking. Understand that building relationships and securing opportunities takes time and effort. Stay persistent in your networking efforts, remain open to feedback, and continuously refine your approach based on your experiences

"Find your Contacts" means locating people who can help your transition into Investment Banking. Start with alumni networks, friends, and family in finance. Attend industry events, seminars, and workshops. Utilize LinkedIn to connect with professionals in IB. Join online forums and groups related to finance. Cold email or message professionals for informational interviews. Remember, networking is about building genuine relationships, so be respectful and professional in your approach.

Linkedin is generally the best tool for researching bankers. If you can afford it, I recommend paying for Linkedin Sales Navigator (at least for just 1 month) so that you can use its more powerful search features. Once you have a list of bankers you want to reach out to at each bank, there are plenty of websites/softwares online that can help you find their email addresses. Some of these are free, others are paid. If you want to do it for free completely, you should also be able to guess their email address based on the bank's email format. Once you have one person's email address, you should be able to guess everyone else's emails as well. It's usually some variation of [email protected].

Following up after networking interactions or informational interviews with a sincere thank-you email can leave a positive impression and help maintain the connection. Seek out mentors in the industry who can provide guidance, feedback, and support as you navigate your transition into investment banking.

"Build your Rapport" involves creating a strong connection with professionals in Investment Banking. Show genuine interest in their work and industry insights. Listen actively and ask thoughtful questions. Share relevant experiences or insights to establish common ground. Follow up with gratitude and updates on your progress. Maintain regular communication to strengthen the relationship. Remember, building rapport takes time and effort, so be patient and authentic in your interactions.

Offering value to your network can significantly enhance your networking efforts. Share relevant articles, offer assistance with research projects, or provide insights on industry trends to demonstrate your expertise and willingness to contribute.

"Polish your Resume" means refining your resume to highlight relevant skills and experiences for Investment Banking. Tailor your resume to emphasize finance-related coursework, internships, or jobs. Quantify achievements and showcase leadership and analytical abilities. Use clear formatting and concise language. Seek feedback from mentors or professionals in IB. Remember, your resume is your first impression, so make it stand out and relevant to the banking industry.

A lot of people don't realize that the quality of your resume affects your conversion rate in networking. If your resume is poorly formatted, a banker is going to be less likely to want to talk to you. Same thing if you lack relevant experience or just don't seem like a credible candidate. This is because bankers are already working long hours and don't have a lot of time to spare. Talking to a candidate who's unqualified is a waste of their time. So before you start worrying about who to reach out to or what to write in your email to improve open rate and reply rates, work on your resume first. Without a good resume, the rest of that stuff is moot.

"Prepare for Interview" involves getting ready to ace interviews in Investment Banking. Research common interview questions and practice responses. Understand financial concepts like valuation, M&A, and financial modeling. Be familiar with recent deals and market trends. Practice articulating your experiences and how they relate to IB. Dress professionally and arrive early for interviews. Lastly, be confident, articulate, and demonstrate your passion for the industry during the interview.
