Be careful not to overextend yourself for free! I have found in the past that there is no substitution for exposure and in the field learning, but that does not mean that your time is not valuable. Make sure you are volunteering for things that fit your goals but if you are taking on part time work that is bringing in revenue, you should be compensated. You can advance your career AND be helping a company out at the same time, so make sure you are benefiting from the role as well.

If you want to switch to a sales function, I would offer to work for free (for a number of days) in a sales department to learn a bit of the trade. Besides that I would take a course on sales - there are so many free courses, which shows any prospective company that are really interested!
