Automotive Engineering professionals aren't often self-employed. So have something to offer that other Automotive Engineers may traditionally lack. Having a niche makes you worthy of being hired as a self-employed individual as opposed to a full-time employee dedicated to one particular company. Most companies directly hire engineers to have complete ownership of their work for a myriad of reasons (e.g., security). Therefore, be worthy of not being subject to full-time employee restrictions. Is it worth it for a client to let you work for other clients in parallel. Is your experience and skill set so amazing that working with you is a no-brainer? Be prepared to offer something that makes the above questions absolute no-brainers!
