What do you do if you want to switch careers without jeopardizing your financial stability?

Financial foresight is a critical yet often overlooked aspect when contemplating a career switch. It's not just about potential earnings in a new field, but also understanding your current financial landscape. Begin by thoroughly evaluating your savings, debts, and regular expenses to clarify your financial standing and identify potential savings areas. Moreover, having an emergency fund is essential for financial security during transitions. Aim to maintain a reserve that covers 3-6 months of expenses to ease financial anxieties when you're between stable paychecks.

A few thoughts: 1. Review current household expenses and be willing to pause, remove, reduce, replace (with lower cost) items. Its a great time to reassess what we spend vs what we could/should spend 2. Identify your comfort zone (ie. How much do I need in reserves to feel comfortable making a move in case it doesn’t work out and need time to find what will). Work on building to that. 3. Keep “expense creep” to a minimum. It’s easy to let expenses go up, especially if the new place is paying more. Keep it tight. Give it time. Find better places for the extra money to go. And of course, evaluate whether the move is just for money or for more opportunity, better lifestyle, a better fit, etc.

I spent 32 years in retail management. Every year, all I thought about was doing something different. But the reality of taking a severe pay cut always haunted me. It finally dawned on me to make the best of it and save and invest my money. Eventually, I saved enough to have a choice about my future. When things finally came to a head, I was able to jump ship and pursue and build my real estate career to full time. Never a regret. And now, I enjoy lots of free time. Amazing how things eventually work out.

At my age, I will not be looking for a career change at this time of my life and since my income is quite good and promising. I specialize in selling and buying commercial plazas for my existing clients and also serving new clients as well. The new system of creating a company to lower my tax bracket, shelter and defer my income until the later days is a very good system. And I will only withdraw my money when my tax bracket is lower.

First, I would either save at least a year’s salary or consider building up your income in the new industry to the point where you are almost replacing your current salary before taking the leap. Simply ask yourself, what am I good at? And what do I most defintely not want to do? Your list will build from there. For me a need interaction with people, big goals and targets and variety (stupid ADHD) This meant my journey from Sales to non executive directing and investing quite straight forward

If I wanted to change careers without jeopardizing my finances, I would look for something that would allow me to transition part time while still in my current career. I would also consider careers that allow for flexibility in schedule to make this work more effectively. Some suggestions that fit the above criteria or real estate mortgage and financial services, such as life, insurance, agent, etc. Post pandemic, there are also so many other fields that allow you to work remotely. Many of these require you to work a certain amount of hours per day, but not within a specific window. That being said, this allows more for the opportunity to continue in one’s current career, while transitioning into another one.

When switching gears/careers, you must be solid; the most important is to network smartly. This sounds cliche, but it's proper phrases/slogans that I am about to say that "Your Network is Your Network" is true. Especially in my current job field. Again, connect with professionals in your desired field, attend industry events, join relevant online forums, and set up informational interviews with people with the job you want. By taking these steps, you can increase your chances of a smoother and quicker career transition.

Linkedin, reddit and twitter are the best places to build a network online. However nothing beats in person networking. Industry events, open days, find all that fit and go to them all. We as a company commit to going to at least 1 in person event each week and at least 1 in another country once a quarter.

The power of networking cannot be over emphasized. Switching careers is easy when you have built a solid network of people. The idea of a network is like a spider web that connects you to several places even unknown paths for which you haven't gone before. So, building a solid network will enable for smooth recommendations which is key for growth and in fact change.

Look at the list of skills you have created, listen to what needs are not met (from your networking) and upskill accordingly.

Base this around you as a person. I am someone who can get overwhelmed with too many excel sheets and too muc detail. So for me, I know I have "x" budget each month and allocate accordingly. I do a once a month review to check nothing needs majorly amended.

When I was starting out in my career, I gave little thought to how my career choices might affect my retirement income. That is to be expected. You should not necessarily make career decisions in your 20's thinking about how it might affect you in your 70's. But, I would say that financial security in the present and future is not an inconsiderable element. I was in the government in a career track. What we used to call "golden handcuffs" when tenured positions with guaranteed annuity were still available. Retirement systems today are more portable than when I was working, so that may lessen the stress. But, even so, leaving a comfy sinecure for greener pastures can be a mirage. That is, changing careers is just changing jobs.

In my past experience, I've always timed my transition carefully. This way, you'll minimize the risk of an extended period without income.
