What do you do if you want to stand out with a creative resume format or template?

Resist the urge to be visually creative unless you're confident that recruiters in your targeted industry will want to see that - and you're sure the resume won't have issues with applicant tracking systems. If you're unsure, focus on being creative with your content, rather than the format/design of the resume. Include tangible, concrete, compelling information that most other people don't include. That will give you a leg up on the competition.

Unfortunately with the AI tools currently many of the past styles of "creative resumes" won't parse correctly. To stand out you also need to be formatted well. I would say stand out in your about me statement. Create poignant but data driven bullet points and your resume can be colorful but keep it "clean" and well designed. Having a resume that's overdesigned can be a distraction to many Recruiters and Hiring Managers. Work on having an amazing portfolio and make sure the link is on your resume!

Don't, just don't. If you're in a creative field, the MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do is include a link to your online portfolio on your resume. That's how you show off your creative skills, not by using a creative resume which could have been designed by anyone or purchased online. In addition, creatively formatted resumes can potentially cause problems with the Applicant Tracking Systems.

If you are in the design world, your resume IS part of your portfolio. This is a design project, just like any other. There are constraints that you have to work around, like readability, scanning by the ATS, and proportional design. But choosing the right fonts, headers, and pops of color are very important.

I totally agree, a jobseekers CV should be unique while showcasing his skills and personality but it shouldn’t be colourful with designs it should be following the standards of the ATS system while showing that he’s the best candidate for the position that he applied to

Creativity does not mean using elements like images and graphics that don't add value, or tables and icons that will be garbled by the ATS. Uniqueness is one thing, ostentatious is another.

For creatives, I usually recommend having two versions. One version, typically made in Word or a Google Doc, for online applications. Another version, designed in Illustrator or Canva or your software of choice, so that when you get direct referrals you can attach as a PDF to the recruiter or hiring manager.

First lay down until the urge goes away. If you are not a graphic designer or similar visual artist a very simple resume with high quality content that leans heavily on quantification of what you have done will be much, much, much more valuable. If you are some variety of visual artist a resume that hints are the style of your work is fine. But it still needs to be easy to read and display your skills in their best glib fashion.

I see this far too often as a recruiter; a candidate wants to stand out, so they download an etsy "pretty" resume template with pictures or "fun" formatting. Any time you create a resume, it needs to be customized. I am not a fan of resume templates because that makes you look like everyone else. Instead, try researching some features in Word that can help you add pops of color or visually make your content stand out.

Skills should appear in the jobs you used them in. If you feel your text is running too long delete independent skill clouds and keep the job entries information dense.

I recommend a list of skills by category. For example: "skills" would be user experience, persona development, sketching, illustration and "tools" would be Photoshop, Figma, Sketch, Canva.

You should avoid using charts or graphs in a resume that you are uploading into an ATS system. You can use them in a resume that will be distributed to your network contacts. But overall, an ATS friendly resume is always a safe bet.

At the end of the day, the very best resumes have well written out areas of expertise and very specific, accomplishments and outcome statements. Regardless of what your industry is, it’s important that you showcase your unique skill set is and what contributions you’ve made at other companies, because past success is an indicator of future success.

It doesn't matter how COOL your template is; the template is a VEHICLE for you to get a JOB. What you write in the resume is what truly matters: - Use #, $, and %. Numbers stick out and quantify your skills. - Avoid using action verbs more than 2 or 3 times. You want to have a diversity of actions. - Use the same tense throughout the entire resume. - 1 page for under 10 years of experience, over that 2 pages is fine. - Avoid vague buzzwords like 'efficiently, innovation, or various' - be more job specific. - Always have a section of your hard skills plainly seen and written. - Having a 'key achievements' section is a great way to stand out. Do not overthink this, just make a quality resume. 'Style' is secondary to CONTENT.

Don't just use ChatGPT to write your bullets. Write them yourself and pretend you're just talking to a colleague. Explain the context of the projects you were working on, such as "developed landing page for new skincare product launch, with 100K monthly visitors"

This part is one of the most overlooked. It is critical that you spend time actually going back and editing your résumé over and over. Make sure you look at all of the punctuation and sure it matches. Be sure all of your verb tenses makes sense. And check for accuracy and spelling. as someone who is hired thousands of people and been in recruiting, I am a stickler for this, because it shows me someone’s attention to detail.

DON'T. Your resume is a professional document. "creative" formats or templates will: 1: get automatically rejected via ATS screening. 2: make you look unprofessional.

Remember your audience. If the hiring manager is a creative director or senior graphic designer, they WILL care what your resume looks like. Check out Behance or Pinterest and search for "design resumes" for some examples. Or, go to the online portfolios of the designers you admire - sometimes they will have a resume linked that you can look at for inspiration.

ONLY use a creative format when appropriate. Never use it when uploading as it will not be ATS compliant. Use it for networking/in-person distribution. Always use PDF format if sending via email. Keep in mind what makes sense for your field. If you are in the arts or design, go for it. In IT? Not so much on the flair. I has to make sense.
