Build prototypes with batch & streaming options.Learn to optimize costs using FinOps principles.

Getting certified in one or many cloud technologies, is another way to showcase knowledge and familiarity with these technologies. Keeping up with changes and new features is equally important as these change at lightning speed. Using Gen AI like Chat GPT to understand cloud concepts with examples and use cases is also useful, especially if you don't yet have an opportunity to use these in a production environment.

Cloud services are very important for database engineers rather, I say for every Infrastructure associates. The cloud is definitely the future and no one can deny it. The features are too many for Application and for Infra candidates and the cloud providers are enhancing the features further by providing the best security standards aligning with the organisation policies.

Everything is moving towards the cloud, so moving in that direction is an obvious choice, how to scale and address various issues in that area would improve your knowledge, also you will need to do your homework on understanding db design wrt scaling.

Unless you have enough resources to manage your own big data center you have to rent/lease it from companies who do, and offer it as a service. But do avoid coupling your systems too tightly to any one cloud provider unless you have very good (domain-driven) reason to go all-in with one of them. With the right architecture, you can make your systems portable across commodity clouds and even self-hosting, but remember: “life is trade-off.”

Vendors or cloud providers give the best security but as a DBA engineer we need to be very cautious with the data protection. The granted privileges to the users The data encryption The auditing of Database The security updates are being applied as per the schedule (Quarterly or 45 days as per the environment) These are the basic things, we can pull the assessment reports to have a track of the security score.

Networking is great and contributing to the community for the challenges which were really time taking and willingness to guide the network makes you more attentive and easy learner. Since there is no age to start/stop for learning, maintain you pace and make yourself count.

Agile is used where both technology and solution is complex or partially known. Product owner needs to work closely with team members to make sure the story is well understood to avoid rework.

Consider the story of a database engineer tasked with resolving a critical data outage during a peak business hour. Despite facing immense pressure and tight deadlines, they remained calm, methodical, and resourceful. Leveraging their expertise and collaborating effectively with team members, they swiftly identified and rectified the underlying issue, minimizing downtime and ensuring business continuity.

Optimizations. Every Data Engineer will at some point in their careers, come across a slow running query. It could be a request from a business user, or from other engineers who come to you for your DE expertise. It could be the cause of a minor inconvenience or cause missing SLA's of mission critical applications. Long story short, A good Data Engineer should be well versed with various optimization techniques - Query structure, Indexing (or Over Indexing), Partitioning, Distribution, Data Skew, Blocks / Deadlocks to name a few. This is a skill not mentioned a lot, but will be extremely useful in solving problems and establishing yourself as an expert in your field.

Every individual is unique in one or some way, every engineer makes mistakes and be the one to learn from them. Peer learning is always good, if you don't have any peers never mind refer to documents, make notes and try to implement it. Always believe in Small steps still count..! just try to be consistent in learning.

I was recently having a conversation with a colleague about how Data Modeling has become somewhat of a lost art. This is a shame, but something that I have eluded to in my previous posts as well. Regardless of the DBMS type Relational or NoSQL, Data Modeling is still key to the success and long term viability of systems. Evidence and demonstration of your ability to develop and refine Data Models from Conceptual to Logical to Physical (remember outside of DDL any Schema-Type is a Physical Data Model, such as JSON or Avro; lets not forget proper OOD as well) will set you apart from other Database Engineers in a world where a core requirement in my book is becoming ignored by many engineers will definitely help set you apart from the pack.

Get Certified. While it’s very good to learn general skills, one thing that I believe stands out is verification of your skillset. Certifications help you get that verification and if you choose it carefully, you will lend your pocket a handsome uplift as well.
