What do you do if you want to stand out as a candidate starting a career in Higher Education?

Teaching at any level is a selfless act, thus, if you have this ambition to join the Higher education as an academic, well done. First, think of what you want to achieve from being an academic, do you wish to enhance the way students are engaged, are you going to enhance the research in a specific area, having a clear goal and vision would help you to move forward and quickly when you are accepted in the position. Indeed, you need a network around you to provide you with support, who would be able to assist you to showcase your achievements at different engagements, and different levels. Keep you resume up to date - and with academic work, this might need to be updated on daily/weekly basis, as you publish, teach, always seek feedback.

Identifying your goals is crucial to success within the academic sphere similar to other fields. Once you have assessed your goals and checked their relevancy, you must outline the sub-goals. A well-defined action plan would ensure that your goals dont turn into just dreams. For instance, in India, teaching at higher education institutes requires UGC/CSIR NET or similar qualifications along with a PhD, while school level requires B.Ed with CTET or other teaching eligibility qualifications. Hence, preparing for these well in advance is essential to enter the industry.

Set goals early, but revisit those goals regularly. In my long half-century in higher education, my goals shifted from teaching to administration and to leading new initiatives (online-learning and AI). While the goals changed, the general direction of injecting communication technologies into daily discourse and higher education at large, did not change, rather they evolved. So, I advise you to set your compass early with the recognition that you most likely will revise the settings later. As you set your goals, you are well-advised to check with those who are in your field. Invite their advice and value it - for that advice has been honed over the decades. Make clear your vision to others, but be receptive to their vision.

If teaching is your strength and passion earn a Teaching Assistant position in graduate school. I came out of graduate school with multiple classes under my belt so I was classroom ready. If research is your primary focus do research in grad school with a professor, start getting your name on research papers. Community engagement maybe valuable too. Truly tailor your experience to the institution you want to work for.

Ideally you would begin to publish these while in graduate school, or at least while spending 1-2 years in visiting assistant professor positions before getting your dream job.

Feedback is a necessary tool for personal development and insight. It is one best way to understand the "self". Feedback helps to understand one's strengths and weaknesses better as a result, one is able to work on his/her weaknesses while improving upon his/her strengths. After feedback, one needs a sober reflection. Some feedback can be misleading therefore one must not solely depend on a single feedback but multiple, but with critical analysis.

Design a learning path for yourself especially in the art of teaching. One way is to shadow multiple teachers to learn their tricks of the trade. On the other hand, there are several free online MOOCs on various aspects of teaching- from course design, course evaluation, to specific tools and techniques of teaching. This may or may not be officially recorded as part of your job, but do it nonetheless. The biggest fear for a teacher is stagnation

To stand out anywhere we need to be really out of the crowd meaning to say you should be extra ordinary. This is only possible when we will make our hobby as our passion then pursue it as a career. This is definitely make you give your best

After more than 50 years on the faculty with many of those years also on the campus of a large university system, I have made contacts with many aspiring professionals in the field.
