I've rarely heard the entire category referred to as creative strategy...it makes the advice sound hollow. The toughest things about becoming a freelance creative professional: -keeping a steady workflow -pricing your services...take the annual salary you want and make the first three digits your hourly...or carefully scope and bid the project, then put a contingency of how many rounds of revisions it includes and the change order fee if exceeded -building a network of freelancers who can let you flex skillset and bandwidth -setting up a retainer option of services and monthly rate -Learning how to sell and market yourself and avoid the shoemaker's kids syndrome -Dare to be different so you stand out and don't sell out

After reading all the steps in becoming self employed, the one step I didn’t see was “Am I disciplined enough for this “ Before going on the quest for self employment you need to seriously consider what it will take to become successful. Ask yourself: Am I organized Am I disciplined enough to work even when things aren’t going well Am I able to manage my time to include all the decisions personal & professional without ignoring any Do I have a place to work, not the kitchen table after breakfast but a place you go to dressed & ready to start a work day. No pajamas allowed. If you answered yes, then you’re ready to get started. Now it’s time to researching the prospective venture. I asked myself Can I do this? Yes I did

My main advice is that it's not quite linear like that, but I am sure that wasn't the intent. Two Things. From quite a bit of personal experience, I can say that it's important to keep pumping out active work, hopefully paid. You'd be surprised how stale work can get. Even though I've got stuff in my portfolio that I am proud of to this day, it sure helps to reference something you just finished a month or two ago. Thing number two -- related to thing number one, be opportunistic and willing to take assignments for (slightly) less than you are worth. There are a lot of prideful people out there who know their worth and won't compromise. If you are just getting started, take work and revenue even for less than your agency rate.
