What do you do if you want to secure a competitive internship in Communication?

Why do you want to work there? What do you know about the company? What do you know about the industry? How can you contribute to the company's success? Answer these four questions first. Then prepare what I call an interview cheat sheet. Research the company's history and mission statement. Figure out its place in the industry--if publicly traded you can look at market capitalization and industry ranking. What are recent news mentions about the company? What do people who work there say about it? Do people work there and leave or work there and move up in the company?

Determine the specific areas of communication you're interested and identify the skills and experience you want to gain through the internship. Then research companies, organizations and agencies that offer internship programs in your area of interest. Connect with professionals in the field of communication through networking events, informational interviews, Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight your relevant skills, experiences and accomplishments in communication. Stay informed about current trends, developments and best practices in the field of communication.

It is so much easier to write job descriptions than accomplishments. Did you greet customers or did you provide excellent customer service? Compliments from customers, co-workers or supervisors. Anything you can quantify should be quantified--so much easier to do if you were involved with social media.

Hook Line Sinker Show, don't tell. Much easier said than done, so spend some time going from, "the man cried" to "tears rolled down his face." I can't just give away all my exceptional advice--reach out for a one-on-one!

Often, we think that listing a series of accomplishments shows that we are skilled. However, this is too cold of an approach. Listing your skills doesn't translate to your competence and experiences in the way you intend. Instead, give more context and details. Help the reader imagine exactly what you did and accomplished, and understand why that makes you qualified. Highlight what you learned and how you transformed. For example, instead of "conducted research and participated in lab meetings" give detail like "actively contributed to lab meetings with fresh insights, leading to improved recruitment methods that helped gain an additional 50 participants"

Don't underestimate your current connections as well. Be open and share what opportunities you're looking for. Your current connections may already know someone who can help you get to where you want to go. As a bonus, they can facilitate an introduction and/or provide a recommendation.
