Video (and audio) technology implements, or is informed by (mostly voluntary) technical standards developed by standards development organizations, including but not limited to the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) and the Advanced Television and Systems Committee (ATSC). To be considered by industry peers as a senior video technologist, you need to truly understand the applicable standards -- take a wide view. Read, review, and re-read the standards. Yes, all of them. For starters. Standards development organizations are staffed by volunteers who meet in private, mostly virtually. Join one or more of these groups and fully participate in discussions and development.
