Seek out internships, volunteer opportunities, or part-time jobs in organizations or initiatives focused on social impact. Stay informed about current events, trends, and developments related to social impact by following relevant news sources, publications, blogs, and social media channels. Lastly, consider finding a mentor/mentorship program to receive guidance and support in the social impact sector.

I would consider using existing skills to build out projects along my interest lines. Build a course. Reach a course. Organize a social enterprise workshop session.

Enroll in a graduate-level program in Social Entrepreneurship or Social Enterprise Leadership. As a faculty member in such a program at the University of Denver, I have witnessed the amazing growth of our students, most of whom are already on the staff of a social enterprise, gain the confidence and knowledge to advance their careers and even lead the startup of the new organization.

Keep in mind that many skills are transferrable to social impact. If you've worked in business development, your skills are likely to translate well to partnerships or fundraising. If you've focused on serving customers in a corporate role, you can likely apply those skills to program design for those served by a social impact organization or initiative. When in doubt, ask people to help you translate your existing skills before pursuing new courses and certifications. You can also look to job descriptions for roles that interest you and see what kinds of skills or certifications are required and look up Linkedin profiles of people in these roles to see their skills as well.

Volunteering is the best way to get hands-on experience in social impact. The beautiful thing is that it's always a win for the organisations too. Volunteering is also an opportunity to "test the waters". Waters in this context means roles/sub-sectors in the social impact industry.

I believe that developing skills is essential. Seek out hands-on learning opportunities, such as internships, volunteering, or courses related to social impact. For instance, if you're interested in community development, you could volunteer at a local NGO working in underprivileged areas to gain practical experience. To me Networking isn't just finding job opportunities but building a community of like minded People! Sharing Ideas with like-minded people can give you better criticism and validity of the idea which eventually helps in maturing the idea, gaining insights, support and inspiration.

If you prioritize Ethical considerations, it not only fosters a great change but justice, equity and empowerment for everyone in the community.

For me, it's important to ethically reflect on your actions and decisions. Consider the impact of your choices on the well-being of communities and individuals facing social injustices. For instance, if you're involved in a social impact project, consider how it might affect different stakeholders and whether it aligns with ethical principles. Engage in discussions with peers and mentors to explore ethical dilemmas and seek guidance on making ethical decisions.

Learn. Many governments, companies, and even LinkedIn Learning are hosting free or subsidized courses to prepare workforces for the social impact economy. If your new to the space, start small and enjoy the ride learning about this vast space and what appeals to you most. Build up your basics and confidence with these powerful resources. If you discover a real passion for let's say EV batteries, seek out certification and degree programs. Remember, baby steps.

The skills and knowledge you develop as a professional can also be of great value to a nonprofit, so consider volunteering your skills, time and energy to support a cause you feel passionate about. By lending your experience, you’ll build a broader understanding of how social impact causes operate, whilst also demonstrating intentional commitment to working in social impact. Consider an ongoing (weekly / monthly) volunteering opportunity for maximum impact and insight.

One thing I've found helpful is to follow those who are in the industry. "Social impact" can be very vague initially. So, interest assessment, skill acquisition will not be effective without sufficient understanding of what the practical social impact space is like. By following those in the industry especially on social media, you can: 1. practically experience what the industry is like from afar. 2. see the existing opportunities and gaps, which can birth new (non existent) ideas for you to pursue. 3. make your journey faster and easier by simply watching those who've done it.
