Moving from a finance intern to a senior management accounting role in five years was driven by developing technical expertise and consistently adding value. Starting with mastering financial tools, I progressed to skills like analysis, budgeting, and strategic planning. Each task solved with insight contributed to organizational goals. Continuous learning and adapting to industry changes were crucial for staying effective, solidifying my career growth.

Exhibiting knowledge needed for a higher role is a good way to communicate readiness to move up the chain of command. It's always preferred to ask for positions of leadership or tasks involving a skillset you don't yet have. An overall enthusiasm for taking on challenging taks is key. Finally, vocalizing your wish to move on to more senior roles is a way to cement you as a candidate. Never asking is a sure-fire way to be overlooked in a dynamic and fast paced environment.

If you don't have an MBA, CPA, CMA pursue them. They will help get your foot in the door. Also, don't be a one-trick pony. Broaden your experience between the different accounting and financial functions like financial or tax accounting, cost accounting, budgeting and forecasting, program accounting and EVMS, estimating, FP&A, etc. Having a broader technical base provides you different routes into management and also a better understanding of their interdependencies.

To move up from staff accountant to a management position, here are a few things you can do: 1. Take on additional responsibilities by showing initiative through volunteering for new projects or tasks outside of your regular duties. 2. Develop your skills by seeking professional development opportunities, such as attending workshops or pursuing certifications relevant to management. 3. Communicate your goals by letting your supervisors know about your career aspirations and express your interest in taking on more leadership responsibilities.

I believe at the pinnacle of every transition requires asserting acquired skills and understanding what it requires to be in the next level. Make it your personal mission to understand leadership through taking up opportunities that require you to lead your colleagues to allow you to exercise those muscles that are required once you arrive in management. Furthermore, by taking up leadership amongst your colleagues allows you to have visibility with your management. This builds trust and reliance on you from management hence making you the first person they remember once an opportunity comes up.

While some accounting and finance management positions will require and seek technical skills (e.g., Controllers, Assistant Controllers) managers truly need to like and serve people. They also have to be able to manage workloads, schedules, workflow, etc. People skills are critical to their success. The same for critical thinking skills. Lastly excellent written, verbal and presentation skills are important. Besides reading books or taking classes in these areas, practice them. The more you practice the more natural they will become.

A management position calls for leadership. There’s going to be a lot more accountability and responsibility. Hence, one should know about #emotionalintelligence (EI) and #culturalintelligence (CI) phenomena. The latter would be more applicable for #international teams. Accounting technicals and fundamentals aside, a management position requires a broader understanding of the business enterprise and activities. In addition, how each aspect stands to impact stakeholders. To this end, one must be aware of the #BalancedScorecard concept coined by Kaplan and Norton.

Sharing from my own experience, I moved step by step from Accountant, to Junior Lead, Team Leader and Manager. The main steps I would describe will be: - Asking ourselves, what type of leader I am, finding a mentor/role model - Identifying the necessary skills to be developed, working consistently, finding opportunities within the company, been proactive. - Setting clear goals, identify the necessary actions and challenges - Speaking with the line manager to support in the journey - Lastly and for me the most important, been a Leader, even though the position is not there yet. Leadership starts from within, as more we are capable to lead ourselves, leading others will just follow naturally.

An upgrade in accountability and responsibility would require a broader knowledge base. Seeking further education, such as a #CPA #certification could prove a powerful tool in leveraging those responsibilities. However, one should also consider development courses that help understand the requisite soft skills. In the end, a management position involves juggling between the duality of technical and soft skills.

Volunteer for special projects (both within the department and for cross-functional teams). Participate on ERM's, local professional association chapters, etc. Attend conferences and summits. Volunteer to give presentations. Most importantly, provide good, valuable service to your peers and customers (be the respected business partner). Under all of this strongly defend your integrity and maintain a strong reputation of ethical behavior.

Networking is a key consideration. There are no two ways about it. As for reputation building, one needs to find suitable role models and mentors to emulate or take inspiration from. This required a lot of self-awareness, introspection and reflection. One needs to make it clear what type of leader they would like to be, what their management style is or would be and what they would like to be known or remembered for. Sorry for getting too philosophical, but most leaders today fail to generate the impact in leading their teams.

As you can, practice leadership characteristics. Identify and eliminate waste in your areas of responsibilities. Be engaged with the teams you are involved. Volunteer to mentor and train the new person.

Here are some key points to achieve a leadership role. 1. Vision and Mission: It is important to define purpose and goals, which should be aligned with the company and your goals. 2. Needs to understand the business acumen. so you know the key factors how the company is generating revenue. it can be learn to analysis financial report and deep understanding of financial insights. 3. Relationship with stakeholders: it gives you the perspective of business and understand market trends. 4. Problem solver: This includes handling the team, training them, helping them to achieve their goals with the company and making small decisions toward the goals 5. Adaptiblity and open-minded: should be ready to adapt to changes and open mind for learning.

Just some simple rules, Consistency with continuous improvement! Take leadership in projects and new initiatives. Build good communication skills with everybody involved in the good existence and sustainabiliy of the firm. Don't show up but kill the tasks and projects, that is how you earn the pleasure of succeeding and growing.????
