What do you do if you want to maximize your career growth as a mobile app developer?

I built video games in the 80s, and was one of the first to build an app for the iPhone, and Android, and the same advice applies here: 1. Find tools that let you write code ONCE, and use that code on MANY (i.e. Flutter) 2. Day one, do speed tests, and build the speed tests into your code 3. Build tools to build code. We started the first App store at Qualcomm called BREW. We enabled developers to sell their apps to phone users. We paid billions of dollars to developers via our app store before Apple or Google built their first phone. The hardest thing to do as a developer is to build an audience of users. Spend most of your time on the schema to do this. The second hardest thing to do is to keep the users engaged with your app. The third hardest thing is monetizing your app, which is made easy if you sort out the first 2.

In over two decades in mobile development, I've learned it's better to aim to be a great architect rather than just a great mobile developer. Top tech firms seek problem-solving skills and language-agnostic abilities. Understanding system architecture, backend, UI/UX, and business logic is essential for true engineering growth, beyond just keeping up with mobile tech trends.

It's hard to overstate the need to go deep in mastery of languages/frameworks/platforms you use. In my experience more value came from being deeply knowledgeable about a single technology than generally knowledgeable about many.

Learn Backend Development. Seriously, develop the empathy towards the other side of your production. Develop product sensibility. hone in your sense towards seeing things in Product Manager's lens. Learn about new technology or framework before it's useful in your day-to-day work. One day your boss is going to ask you what you think about a new tech out of left field and you can stand out providing a solid, well thought out answer. Or better yet, suggest new framework at opportune time to solve long-standing issues. Mobile isn't rocket science, the way to succeed being purely in mobile is to be able to craft beautiful user experience.

Nothing helps you advance your career as much as a growth mindset. Fixate on the process of continuous learning. We learn the most by 'doing', not 'thinking about doing it'. So, don't wait for the perfect outcome, dive right in. You'll learn the most from your mistakes.

Keeping up to date with the app development trend is the key fundamental to advance the career growth in the app development. My two cents based on more than a decade long career in mobile development; instead of trying to grow as a great mobile developer, try to become a great engineer. If you look at hiring process of dream employers in tech industry, their interviews are typically platform and programming language agnostic. Their focus remains on problem solving skills and how do you come up with optimised solutions to challenging problems. While staying updated about latest developments in mobile technology is crucial, it’s equally important to understand the overall system design including APIs & backend, UX, and business needs of product and services you work on in order to grow as an engineer, not just as mobile developer.

As a mobile engineer specialist especially that of a cross-platform, you have privilege of getting too many job opportunities in the market. However, your growth prospects are limited. In order to be tech lead or engineering manager or a technical director you need to have experience of backend development as well. Besides technical skills, you need to possess analytical thinking and courage to help the team whenever they are blocked in some problem.
