There are classes available in most major cities and some really great group classes online as well. Be patient, listen, avoid trying to be funny, and trust the process. You are learning to get comfortable with not knowing what comes next. Embrace that.

The main thing to remember in practicing improv is that you need an experienced and qualified coach to help you. Without that you can build and reinforce bad habits, which is the opposite of what practice is for. Lots of great coaches are available for hire online and in major cities. If you don’t have one in your area you can typically bring one in to teach someone in your area to coach, or you can travel to an improv festival (like a conference) and learn there.

Yes! See as many different shows as you can. There are infinite ways to improvise, seeing shows is the best way to find the styles that you connect with. There are lots of shows available online now if you don’t have live improv near you.

Another way to think about this is to remove judgement. Your instructors should create a class culture where support and trust are the top priorities. That allows us to take risks without fear of judgement.
