Get familiar with the techniques for writing a script. You have the Aristotelian or Three-Act Structure that can be summarized as: "Your character wants something intensely, encounters obstacles to get it, immerses him or herself in a hostile environment from which he or she learns and evolves to succeed in getting what he or she wants, or not." Then you have the Hero's Journey in which a character leaves the familiar world behind, embarks on an adventure, then learns to navigate the unfamiliar world, and returns home fully transformed. Third and not least you have John Truby's "Seven Key Steps of Story Structure" which is very useful for creating great stories and characters with a layer of complexity.

Scriptwriting is very different from writing a novel or blogs. You need to get into a specific mindset, tone and tense. Annalise other people's scripts. You can find a lot of movie scripts online. Don't get bogged down getting it perfect first time, just get to the end then go back and edit and amend.

Write. Write some more. Then write some more. Get it down on the page and edit it later. The worst thing you can do as an up and coming writer is to stop yourself from writing or to interrupt yourself as you're writing because it's "not as good as it should be". Get it on the page. You can always edit it later.

All of the above are important, but something else to consider is PATIENCE. If you’re going into it thinking you’re going to sell your first script for 1 million bucks and become famous, you’re going to be dealt a dose of reality. Bear in mind that only 2% of scripts written and pitched to producers are of quality. This means 98% of the scripts that are sent out in the hopes of getting produced are, for lack of a better word – crap. As with any profession or vocation, it takes time and effort to hone and master the craft. You need to view this as a long game. Every one of your early scripts should be considered learning scripts. The more you write, the more experience you gain. Every script should improve the quality of your writing.
