your learning should be from scratch i mean from basics to advance. and in machine learning or in data science i think only doing projects and training the models is not enough also you have to know about the baiscs of each and every concepts and algorithm and also you have some good practical knowledge. but without knowing the baiscs of ml algorithms it(projects) will never work because one can generate code from AI but the thing make you differ from everyone is the understanding of algorithm and the Maths behind the algorithm..

La práctica hace al maestro. Después de una etapa inicial relativamente teórica sobre estadística, lenguajes de programación, etc. Se debe poner en práctica. Dependiendo de qué tipo de modelo predictivo le sea de mayor interés (series de tiempo, predicción espacial, clasificación, etc) se debe buscar ejemplos y posteriormente ejercicios que se puedan desarrollar, desde la preparación de los datos hasta la creación del modelo y, fundamentalmente, el análisis y conclusiones que se puedan obtener. En plataformas como Kaggle se puede practicar este tipo de modelos. Hechos varios modelos, buscar mejorar las técnicas de limpieza e imputación de BD, además de corrección de errores típicos de modelación, como la autocorrelacción o colinealidad.

Besides understanding algorithms and writing code, understanding of domain is equally important. If you understand the domain then half of the work is already done. Equally important is to understand the algorithm which should be applied on the particular scenario. Using correct variables is very important. Any one can write the code with some practice but deciphering the output comes with great experience.

Besides different tools and technologies that are available for predictive modelling, in my opinion it’s important to understand the problem at hand and be clear with the questions that one needs answer to. This can be achieved by having a domain expertise as having a domain expertise also helps in evaluating the results that one gets from the mathematical models.

To teach. Before pursuing a career as a Data Scientist, I worked for many years as a researcher, both in Brazil, Italy and the United States (I have a degree in Physics).
