As every industry has it’s own challenges. Before jumping into HR consulting one must be ready for continuous learning as every organization he/she may encounter new/different challenges and he/she must be sharp & experienced enough to address the situation.

That is an easy one! Meet smart people. Ask lots of good questions, listen and learn. Throughout my career, even as a Director of multiple large recruiting teams, I always made time to meet with accomplished professionals, get to know them, learn about their experience and expertise. The knowledge, the know how and the know who I gained has been priceless.

First up, could you take a good look at your HR arsenal? What skills make you the HR superhero you are today? Then, spot those knowledge gaps. Cue the montage of online courses, workshops, and webinars! Now, it's time to get your hands dirty with real-world consulting gigs. Influencing/facilitation skills 5. Teamwork and relationship building/stakeholder management 6. Service-orientation Seek candid feedback from your current or ex-managers on your skills. Talk to seasoned consultants to understand the pros (e.g. intellectual stimulation, a sharp learning curve) and cons (e.g. very long work hours, acutely challenged work life balance) of consulting. Then, prepare a personal balancesheet of the pros and cons of consulting for you. Reflect on this, ask a mentor for advice. Finally, take your own decision.

All of us have so many talents we don't know how to maximize our inborn wealth of knowledge. As a kid growing up it was difficult to relate to others due to my scattered talents. However my talents were fun; interesting to me, as I matured I realized my real talent which was music didn't bring me the lifestyle I wanted. I married a non- musical partner, so the traveling, the diverse friends and the creative lifestyle did not work. So I explored various careers. Luckily, I found a wonderful career. Tech is must have thing in HR! As a consultant you need to update with tech or you just like dinosaur. If you want be consultant, make sure you learn about the tech trend. Research whats the newest one and how the contribution the business. The main point is not only know the latest tech but you need to understand whats the benefit for business. How significant to give impact to operational expense, employee performance, etc.

The 2 options are not mutually exclusive: to the opposite are compatible. Let me share my experience. Almost 20 years ago I had a coach and loved the experience. I was interested to learn more about it so I have attended ( my own money and time) few conferences. I asked 3 senior coaches to meet and asked questions, enrolled to ICF and got the certificate. I then did coaching pro-bono with 10 people. Then I became a coach. In summary don’t hesitate to cultivate another skill, invest time and resources, talk and listen the best in town, volunteer, learn. It worked for me it will work for you too, believe me. In fact I have not only develop my practice but wrote 2 books based on my experience as HR director and executive coach. Go for it

Denn nur wenn ich wei?, wofür ich brenne, was mich zufrieden macht und wie ich genug davon bekomme, kann ich die neue Richtung, den Weg und die notwendigen F?higkeiten neu definieren und entwickeln.

Moving from being an in-house HR practitioner to an HR consultant involves a mindset shift - away from being sold to, and now needing to constantly sell. Business development doesn’t come easily to everyone and rejection is hard. Finding the time for marketing and developing leads can be hard when you’re also tied up with delivering projects for clients - but ultimately rewarding to feel like you are your own boss.

Continuous learning is the new normal now, so that will come inevitably with any such movement. However, key is to understand the right areas within HR consulting that you feel most passionate as this field has itself evolved significantly over the years and has various sub specialisations. So to think of movement, I feel you should: - get self clarity on why you want to make the move Understand the various sub streams within HR Consulting - Figure out the 2-3 that you feel interested and aligned to your ‘why’ - look for opportunities in your current roles/ organization to get exposure/ experience in that area - make a move to a formal HR consulting setup when you feel confident on the skills

1. Wear the hat of a solution provider. Even while you are evaluating to move into HR Consulting, start playing the role of a business partner. Shift your focus from narrow execution of tasks / responsibilities to a wider gamut of business / people needs. Based on the identified needs start prioritising them and identify possible solutions. 2. Sell to internal stakeholders In my personal experience, I would say the larger challenge lies in selling your services to the clients. Learn to market / sell your solutions to the internal stakeholders and keep them invested in actively.. Looking out for concerns that they might raise and reflect on how you'd address them 3. Look for opportunities to collaborate / assist established Consultants.

Focus on getting at least 1 of these 3 experiences since you may not get them all : 1) multi industry - target to gain experience in 2-3 different sectors eg. manufacturing & services at mid management roles. This helps to prove you are not only an industry specialist, but can work across other fields. 2) multi stream - target to work in at least 2-3 areas in HR eg Comp & Ben + Recruitment, so it provides a wider breadth of HR knowledge to advise future clients as you know these areas interdependencies. 3) True business partnering - proactively work with line managers versus just reacting to their HR needs. Anticipate the people related challenges eg. A new product launch / market growth and address it to support the business.
