These assessments can give you feedback on your emotional awareness, expression, regulation, and reasoning. You can use this feedback to identify areas where you need to improve and set goals for your EI development.
Reflect on your ability to recognize and understand emotions, both in yourself and in others, as well as your capacity to manage and regulate those emotions effectively. I have a friend who I observed with her young child many years ago. The child didn't want to put a jacket on. In my childhood, you would have been told: We don't have time for this! Put the jacket on! But my friend got down at eye level. Asked the child why they didn't want to wear the jacket. The child bemoaned that the jacket was puffy and would limit movement. My friend sympathized with the child and shared her concern about the cold. I knew immediately that I wanted to learn from this person. She's a role model to me to this day.
Empathy is the core of EI and UED. It is the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes and understand their feelings, needs, and perspectives. To practice empathy, you need to be curious, open-minded, and respectful. You need to ask questions, listen actively, and observe carefully. You need to avoid making assumptions, judgments, or stereotypes. You need to show compassion, support, and appreciation. You can practice empathy in every stage of your UED process, from user research to testing to feedback.
For many of us, we've learned to listen with our own story in mind. We ask ourselves: How does this fit into my experience of life? What am I going to stay next? Etc. Empathy invites us to name our own emotions about a situation and then set those aside in order to be fully present to the other person. This doesn't mean we ignore our own story. It means we process our own story later. This moment now is about hearing the depths of another's experience and staying with them in that experience. It is deeply healing to simply know that we are heard.
Cultivate the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Actively listen to their perspectives, validate their emotions, and strive to see situations from their point of view. Engage in exercises that promote empathy, such as perspective-taking or storytelling.
Managing your emotions is another key aspect of EI and UED. It is the ability to control your impulses, reactions, and moods. It can help you cope with stress, frustration, and conflict. It can also help you avoid emotional biases, such as confirmation bias or negativity bias, that can affect your UED decisions. To manage your emotions, you need to be aware of your triggers, responses, and consequences. You need to use strategies, such as breathing, meditation, or positive self-talk, to calm yourself down. You need to express your emotions constructively, rather than suppressing or venting them.
Managing our emotions is probably a misnomer as it gives the impression that we have "control." We may be able to give the impression of control, but whether or not that control is real is another story. That being said, we can learn that our emotions are temporary and learn to be more present and compassionate towards ourselves. There is always a peak to our emotions - a moment when we feel them most intensely. We can learn to recognize and name what we're feeling. We might find ways to them ride that wave - breathing, compassionate touch, music, movement - until we feel more stable again. We can also begin to recognize that we need more time before we respond, recognizing when emotion may be clouding our perspective.
Develop strategies to regulate and control your own emotions, especially in challenging or high-pressure situations. This may involve techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or cognitive reframing to maintain composure and make rational decisions.
Emotional creativity is the ability to use your emotions to generate novel and useful ideas. It can help you enhance your UED skills, such as ideation, prototyping, and storytelling. It can also help you create more emotionally engaging user experiences that resonate with your target audience. To develop your emotional creativity, you need to explore your own and others' emotions. You need to use techniques, such as mood boards, personas, or scenarios, to stimulate your emotional imagination. You need to experiment with different emotional tones, styles, and elements in your UED solutions.
