The other aspect is game jams, a sure way to meet like minded people, learn from others, and get practice building experiences is game jams. Due to the time limits you have to be shorter in scope which can lead to great learning. Networking in the game industry is so vidal I can't recommend these game jams enough. Go to game industry events, never be afraid to talk to people in this industry. You will also find that the games industry is actually quite small in a lot of ways at least I did.

I can agree and disagree with keeping up with trends. You do need to understand what's going on in the industry, however when it comes to development I don't ever recommend chasing trends. Be inspired by them for sure, but don't chase them. Don't add the next shiny new button or thing to your project just because. This can cause feature creep and can also lead to things breaking all the time. Don't keep upgrading your engine. One thing I see all the time is upgrading the engine version doesn't matter if your in Unreal or Unity. Grab an LTS version and stay with it. Moving from version to version unless you have a really good reason is a bad idea. I will say understanding game release dates before you release your game is important.
