What do you do if you want to kickstart your writing career with networking?

New writers often struggle to identify a niche or industry to focus on. This leads to frustration, wasted effort/time, and the feeling of running around in circles, not making any progress. You may fear limiting yourself to just one specialty. But defining this aspect of your business will actually give you FREEDOM. It will open doors and attract higher-quality work. Think of it this way: if you need a high-quality headshot for your LinkedIn profile, are you going to the car mechanic whose also takes photos out back? No. You'll seek out a pro who specializes in what you need. The clients who need your writing want to trust that you are an expert in their field. So just cut their hair. Don't try to also sell them an oil change.

If your aim is to use your book to gain more clients, write a book that provides value to your reader. Then link your book to your business. Not everyone will sign up but many will see the value you give and want your tailored assistance.

Made sure you are marketing yourself consistently on every online platform you use. Send the same message, repeatedly, until people know who you are and what you do. Start posting authority content to showcase your writing and highlight your area of expertise or specialty. When you start to get engagement, interact with those people. Reply to their comments, thank them for sharing your post, and let them know you've noticed them and they matter to you. Connect with people within your industry, but not just with other writers. (More on this in section 4.)

Search online for business groups in your city. Try to find in-person groups as it's easier to network that way. These are the people who will provide insight and support, and will eventually refer you to possible clients. Most of them have already written books as well.

Joining LinkedIn and connecting with like-minded professionals is a great start. But don't stop there - it will limit your network. Seek out opportunities to connect with other professionals who are NOT writers. People who may NEED a writer -- such as business owners, coaches, or course creators. Find who you can serve. Find out what they need and start building that relationship, so when they need a writer, you will have positioned yourself to be at the top of their minds. When you reach out, avoid contacting them cold. Engage with them through their posts, commenting relevantly so they get to know you. Be sincere. Tell them why you like what they wrote, contribute to the conversation, and be supportive.

Support your fellow ?? writers Whenever I like something or posts I definitely reach out to them. Tell them how their work is so good. Don’t spend your time on LinkedIn without strategy. This place is best for connections and I have found best people here who support me the most in this journey.

Take the opportunities that are presented to you. Other writers are not your competition. Remember, readers don't only read one book. If they find something interesting that is similar to your book, they're more likely to jump over to your book as well. Help other writers by giving them advice that you found helpful.

Networking is a marathon, not a sprint. Some of your relationships will go nowhere. Others could pay off in a big way. However, you shouldn't view these connections as transactional, or lottery tickets that may pay off. They should be seen as friendships and acquaintanceships that will mature over time. This network of writers and editors will eventually lead to real opportunities!

Being known as a writer will help you receive more offers to write for free for exposure. This, in turn, will lead to more speaking opportunities and more interaction and networking.
