One thing I found extremely helpful is to set really ambitious energy targets (such as Paris proofing targets or RIBA 2030 / LETI) and monitor these through the design and construction phase to ensure they are delivered. By adopting #passivhaus certification you can easily save 60-80% of energy against standard buildings. This is achieved through optimising a design and quality control checking. These yearly savings can be substantial for very little additional cost, provided a good return on investment. Complimenting energy efficiency it’s equally essential to design buildings to be use renewable energy only (ie no fossil fuels - 100% electric).
