What do you do if you want to improve your writing career?

In my personal opinion learning and practice are key to improving any skill set and hence a career. So taking writing courses to learn new tips and techniques, and collecting good knowledge through reading more and more books with good and professional content.

Actually.. if we want to improve our writing skill firstly, find your weaknesses and mistakes .. just work on that .. Don't google it.. learn from your mistakes ??

I believe this is an important step as constructive criticism is helpful to proliferating. However, it is important to discern between constructive criticism and baseless criticism. Baseless criticism or feedback shouldn’t be used to sway your writing style or technique.

It is important that when you write you ensure that the person who will be reading your work will get the same message that you want to get across and will understand it the same way you do. As much as peer review can be an aggressively critical exercise, it is wise to have peer review on your writing in order to improve your craft

In addition to having a mentor, it is important to connect with other writers. Consider a “thinking partner”. This would be a person who is a colleague or classmate that you enjoy spending time with intellectually and socially. Writing/ thinking partnerships can provide you with inspiration and constructive criticism. Regularly meeting with other writers can also help you broaden your network and enrich your life with different perspectives. A writing partnership (or even a small group) can also help to hold you accountable in setting goals and making plans to follow through with them.

Seeking feedback is important, but also speaking truth matters. I would make sure you don’t seek too much feedback. If you have innovative thoughts, they can be diluted with too much feedback. Feedback is helpful when it helps to enhance your message and amplify it. I would be careful to make sure to know the intention behind the feedback. For instance, somebody suggested to me to stop talking about women’s health. There are great disparities here and the feedback came from a naysayer. My biggest piece of advice would be to make sure that the person giving you the feedback is someone you are aligned with and believes in you. And truly support you. Sometimes people say they support you… But are they really doing it with their actions?

Sometimes it's difficult to reach the first point, maybe because we are in a difficult point in our carrier so we can ask for help with people around. Ask to somebody who you admire or somebody who knows your work. The can point out your skills to improve but also your better skills

Humour attracts attention, gains an immediate response from your reader and reflects your personality. Wordplay, irony, substitutions, reversals… There are techniques that will instantly make your work more readable. Take a look at Comedy writing techniques, or examine writers like David Sedaris to identify his humour tricks. If you can't be funny, get out of the way.

Use complex datasets and write the explanation appropriate for different audiences according to their level of expertise (e.g., technical vs. simple language) to sharpen your writing skills.

Learning, Learning, Learning! The difference between successful and unsuccessful techies is learning. The successful ones learn more and try to apply that in their own work, while those who sit idle thinking about improving often fail. For writing, reading is the best way to learn. The more you read, the more you'll learn the styles and tones of other authors. But it will only be beneficial if you take notes and identify your weak areas to improve through their writings.

I think it's essential to learn how to use AI. Although I've not found AI to generate great writing, I've used it to spark my own creativity. Learning how to use AI effectively will likely be an important skill moving forward.

??Absolutely! One trick I always use is to track your writing; it gives you insight on your work and which areas to work on as you keep writing. Writing should evolve every other day, you possibly can't use the same styles and techniques on every piece you curate. Challenge yourself through writing fellowships and writing challenges like '100 days writing' etc. You acquire so much knowledge from such activities. ??Over the years, I've realized that you also have to be an avid reader. Let's say you curate health content; you'd have to tap into the old books for a start to be able to compare with current health trends. Your ability to come up with great content is dependent on how much you expose your mind to!

Everyone out there has an opinion. Opinions different from your own can be very interesting. Some of the best friends I have made over the years are ones who don’t always agree with my opinions. We debate and learn from each other. And get to understand that there are no absolutes.

Publish pieces on popular online platforms like LinkedIn, Medium or Substack so more people can see your work. Engage with people on those platforms and get folks to sign up for your free newsletter where you publish and showcase even more of your work. Keep writing, keep publishing, and keep engaging. It takes time to grow your audience. But it doesn’t have to be hard to reach them.

Building a network is something that I wish I did years ago. I only started to do it recently. I remember hearing Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent, in Ted Lasso live recently. He was doing a comedy special and he said that in his early years, he had such great content, but nobody listened. Building your platform, promoting yourself, these should be commended. I find that it can be hard to promote yourself without the right people around you. Make sure you have a community that truly support you. It’s not easy to build a network and you need that core group to have your back. Because you will stumble and you need people to tell you it’s OK, tomorrow will be a better day. You got this!

To diversify your clients and projects, experiment with different niche topics and content styles. Research the latest writing trends and the niches that are in demand. Check if your skills and interests match the market's demand. If not, upgrade the skills you need. Learn as much as you can from fellow writers and industry experts. Read widely. Once you are ready, start applying for new projects.

This is one thing I love most about writing, you can always diversify what and how you write. Let's say you started out writing short texts, you can experiment with long texts too, you can even try out different formats that help you connect more with your audience. In short, writing can be interesting, you just have to keep thinking outside the box.

Writing with passion is an enjoyable experience that can lead to great ideas. Even during burnout, reflecting on previous work can bring motivation and appreciation for one's passion.

Writing daily is a fun way to document your growth & stay connected to your simplicity. With each passing day, we move into a new self & our old self dies. The new self is more complex, hardened, suspicious and cynical than its predecessors. These then accumulate and show up as the lines of age on our faces. An infant has only two kinds of lines on his face – a frown line and two smile lines. As we grow up, we complicate things. We smile when we don’t have to, and we cry for things we shouldn’t care about. We keep trying to look and act to conform to a certain set of norms, hungry for social validation and acceptance. And then when we look back at ourselves one rainy afternoon, we can hardly recognize or touch the simplicity that once was.

Write about what you think is important. I wrote about things like high speed rail and public transportation because I thought (and still think) it is important. I barely made any money, which made me quit, so make sure you can make at least enough money to satisfy your passion and supplement your income. If you are trying to make a living sole as a writer, good luck. I think it is extremely difficult to do, so know you will need some breaks to make that happen.

Some others ways to improve your writing career are: 1. Read Widely: Read books, articles, and other materials in your genre of interest. This will not only improve your knowledge but also expose you to different writing styles and techniques. 2. Set Clear Goals: Define what success looks like for you, whether it's publishing a book, landing a particular client, or achieving a certain income level. Remember, a writing career is a marathon, not a sprint. Patience, perseverance, and a willingness to continuously learn and adapt are essential to your long-term success.

- If your writing touches even one person positively each day, it’s worth the effort. - When you write & engage with readers you realize that people are the same all over – beyond layers of labels & rhetoric, beneath colors of skins & passports. - You can’t plan to write a ‘hit’. You can just write. Most blockbusters are surprise blockbusters. They come along when you are least expecting them. - Some of your most heartfelt writing might go unnoticed. Some of your best poetry may not be understood. That comes with the territory. - As you look back, you’ll realize that your best writing always comes from your heart. Don’t try too hard to be sharp. - If you have less time, write a long post. Because it takes a long time to write a short one.

Write daily. Consistency and discipline play a big role in one's success as a writer, even when it involves creative writing. Create a motivating and non-distracting workspace. Anticipate possible challenges in advance and devise strategies to counter them- block notifications or try out tools like pomodoro timer, apps like 'forest' etc. to help focus better. Writer's block is a real thing, so don't be disheartened if it happens to you. Instead, try proven strategies to overcome it- take regular breaks, get a change of scenery, set achievable targets, set deadlines to be on track, and above all, try to ignore the pressure of perfectionism. Write a first draft, even if it is not as good as you want it to be. Done is better than perfect.

Read. All. The. Time. Create a regular habit of reading/watching/listening to all types of content. Break out of your social feed and commit to consuming nonfiction and fiction books, magazines, news and lifestyle sites, essays, news reports, columns, podcasts and more... It's a great way to keep learning and continue to be relevant.

The most important thing I found helpful in improving my writing is 'reading more and more.' When we read more only we will be able to grab more vocabulary. Then we do not want to put an extra effort to write a good piece of work. It will flow inadvertently and smoothly.
