This allows you to explore and learn. Taking a course is more of theory, volunteering helps you put.things in perspective and see the reality of the field you are choosing. I recommend volunteering as an exposure both to your field of interest and to the job market

For one thing I think your network will do you much good. You might have the right skills but the right people who need it must know you have them..and your network is your best ally to sell your skills. They will promote you free of charge and in informal settings and formal settings.
