Probably the best way to get wider experience within the design community is to go to the design reviews. Ask lots of questions both in and out of meetings, show interest and learn. Be prepared to stay extra time to experiment. For me I had identified that while I was good at analog I was weak in digital. I set myself tasks to design the various Ana-digital blocks we may need. These ranged from an SAR, to digital comparators, serial and digital bus structures. These all played huge dividends later. Set up a work area that you can play in and not clog up a project work area, in my current company we call it the sandbox.

The more you learn, the more you realize how little you know. Most structured learning is all about teaching you how to learn, or how to teach yourself. When entering a completely new field taking advantage of an available class, is great. However if you believe that this will teach you all you need to know, this is a mistake, take it as an introduction only. Failures are good when we learn from them.
