What do you do if you want to excel in your Higher Education career using active listening skills?

Put your phone/ laptop away during meetings. I am guilty of multi-tasking while I am in meetings. You cannot be an active listener if you are juggling different screens and responding to emails.

Many problems could be resolved simply by listening. Impatience to respond or making assumptions can distract us from our goals. It's crucial to pay close attention during conversations as it paves the way forward, fosters active dialogue, and clears up any misunderstandings. One of the biggest obstacles is selective hearing, which must be curbed. Being present, attentive, taking notes, and asking questions are essential practices to combat this tendency.

This skill is particularly important in Higher Education, as it enhances communication between students and educators, leading to more effective learning outcomes. Active listening involves fully concentrating on what is being said, rather than just passively hearing the words. It requires paying attention to the speaker's verbal and non-verbal cues, such as tone of voice, body language, and facial expressions, to fully understand their message. It involves responding appropriately to demonstrate understanding, which can include asking clarifying questions, paraphrasing what has been said, and providing feedback.

Non-verbal cues speak volumes, more so than verbal cues. Make sure you maintain eye contact with the speaker, nod your head periodically to show you are in fact listening, and don't be distant! Yes, respect personal space, but don't get so distant that you come across as disinterested.

I agree, in my experience this is so important and often we don't pay attention to it. For example, you should try to maintain eye contact with the speaker to demonstrate attentiveness and understanding. Maintain a pleasant and interested facial expression. Smile when appropriate and avoid expressions that convey boredom or disinterest. Sit or stand up straight with an open and relaxed posture. As it has been said occasionally nod your head in agreement or understanding to show that you are following along and processing the information. Use appropriate hand gestures sparingly to emphasize key points or express agreement. And subtly mirror the speaker's body language. This can help create a sense of rapport and connection.

Non-verbal cues, such as body language, play a crucial role in active listening. Maintaining eye contact, nodding in agreement, and leaning forward can reinforce your verbal acknowledgments and show speakers that you are engaged and value their contributions. These non-verbal cues can enhance the quality of interactions and foster collaborative opportunities in your academic career.

One of the most important skills in my work, counselling, is to walk people through their own thoughts and ideas to help them establish their goals and aspirations with crystal like clarity. So at the every discussion, I summarise and discuss the key points and make them the basis for the next discussion.

For me, presenting myself as a trustworthy and empathetic listener works. This means not only hearing the words that another person is saying but, more importantly, understanding the complete message being sent. Paying attention and giving the speaker my undivided attention. Acknowledge their comments, and clarify ambiguous points. Show that I am listening. Also, Using my body language to show that I am engaged. Providing feedback, our personal filters, assumptions, judgments, and beliefs can distort what we hear. As a listener, your role is to understand what is being said. Defer judgment, and allow the speaker to finish each point before asking questions. Don't interrupt with counter-arguments.

Cognizance is affective by memory. Introverts blossom by expressiveness in encouragement. Extrovert Criticisms may be done later. Guidance, orientation, tactical learning, instincts are checked for accuracy and precision.

Active listening is an invaluable skill whether you are speaking with a student or colleague. Try to cultivate a mindset of judgment-free curiosity. Emphasize open-ended, unstructured questions (e.g., "What do you think would help you in this situation?") and limit the use of yes/no questions. Ask for clarification ("Can you say more about that?") when you are confused about how the other person came to certain conclusions or decisions. Even if you disagree, reflect back your understanding of what you've heard ("So if I'm hearing you correctly, it sounds like..."). Look for points of agreement or perspectives that you can validate. Avoid interrupting. Make sure the other person has finished speaking before taking your turn.

Active listening is more than eye contact and nodding along. Engage with questions and not with statements, and ensure that the questions are open and give space for them to share. Engage with every individual as though they are the experts of their own life and assume that you are hearing fragmented pieces. Cultivate a spirit of curiosity towards individuals and don't be blind to the sociocultural power imbalances that might be in the room with you.

I whole heartedly agree. Being genuine will be more important than ever as the possibilities for replication become more and more sophisticated.

More and more, actively listening and other power skills will be important for true "understanding" given the amount of change happening socially and in education. We have seen more that people are not saying what they mean, but are instead concerned/agitated/worried about something else. At the same time, they are not able to openly express what they really need/feel. As such, considering body language, context of answers and inflection in voice/pattern/stress/modulation are all good indicators to steer the conversation and arrive at what is actually the "thing behind the thing."

In a career spanning decades, I have learned that true excellence in higher education is not just about disseminating knowledge. It is about fostering a culture of understanding & respect. Active listening is our most powerful tool. It enables us to: ? Understand diverse student needs ? Enhance teaching methodologies ? Promote interdisciplinary collaboration ? Engage meaningfully with communities By deeply listening, we not only address immediate challenges but also anticipate future needs, laying the groundwork for innovative solutions & resilient communities. My journey has shown me the transformative power of listening in creating inclusive, dynamic learning environments & continuously improving & challenging the status quo.

The current generation will never stop learning, and neither should we. Modeling the behavior of continuous improvement is something all educators should be doing. As such, the first step is admitting that we may have overlooked something or misunderstood what a student/colleague meant through verbal or non-verbal communication. Actually stating, "I'm sorry, I misunderstood what you meant" goes a long way and demonstrates commitment to improvement instead of dismissing a misperception as it might make you seem fallable/unknowledable/weak.

Because active listening is a skill that is developed over time, keep a journal that includes successes and failures. There are days in which we listen to respond not to understand. That is okay. Keeping a journal to reflect on the feelings and actions of both successes and failures helps internalize what we do well and identifies where we can improve.

Train. Active listening is a skill, not just an attribute, and it isn’t something that everyone can necessarily do so easily. If you want to be better at it, learn and practise. It’s about applying skills and also knowing what to do with the information you’ve heard.

Efficiency and Effectiveness in Higher Education teaching requires prior practical experience in the area being taught.Based on my teaching experience as a former diplomat,I was able to blend the theory and practice of diplomacy which defined the career choices of many students and it resulted in lifetime memories by students of our engagement in lecture rooms.Ten years done the line,students in their respective professions, would remind me of how relevant my teaching was during their student days

In my practice and through the experience of teaching very diverse group of students I can stress the value of being culturally sensitive when it comes to active listening. Cultural differences play a significant role in how active listening is approached and nonverbal cues are interpreted. It is important to have cultural sensitivity along with active listening skills. Eye contact norms, the meaning of silences, gestures, physical distance in conversations, and even the significance of common nods can vary greatly between cultures, impacting communication and engagement in educational contexts. Awareness of cultural differences improves the efficacy of active listening, promotes inclusivity, and supports better communication.

Me parece importante recordar y repensar la importancia de la escucha activa durante el periodo de pandemia. Sin duda, los profesores de nivel superior tuvieron que desplegar esta importante habilidad ante un escenario altamente incierto y complejo. Sin embargo, la escucha activa no solo es necesaria en escenarios de emergencia, ya que esta habilidad blanda habrá de requerirse ante entornos en los que la IA y las tecnologías se insertan cada vez más y en consecuencia, se revalora lo humano.
