First of all you have to have clear understanding of the problem particularly shortcomings of the currently available solutions. This needs to be conveyed in a very lucid manner. How the solution developed by is able to overcome the problems being faced. The language of the communication has to be technical yet simple.

The purpose of solving problems in materials science is to develop and improve materials that meet specific needs across various industries. This field combines principles from chemistry, physics, and engineering to innovate and enhance the properties of materials, aiming at technological advancements, sustainability, and superior performance in applications ranging from aerospace to healthcare. Solutions in materials science address critical challenges by creating environmentally friendly, durable, and efficient materials. This not only leads to economic benefits and technological progress but also contributes significantly to addressing global issues like energy consumption, environmental pollution, and medical advancements.

Do you know that materials science is a part of applied quantum mechanics along with application of classical physics such as molecular dynamics chemistry and process engineering? Being a material scientist the best strategy in my opinion would be for sustainable development can be achieved through a significant research followed by predictions and observations, interpreting data, and drawing conclusions in totality a through analysis of problem and them propose solutions based on current trends and market needs which will eventually contribute to company reputation.

Approaching the problem from a different perspective other than the conventional way will lead to innovative solutions. Sometimes the solution we are looking for may be much simpler than we expect.

Fundamentals, fundamentals, and fundamentals. I recommend to trace the problem or challenge to the fundamentals and then come up ideas to address issues. An example: Lithium dendrite formation is a key issue for lithium metal battery. The deposition process is determined by current density, material surface uniformity and surface functional groups. Will there be a way to confine the deposition and well control it? How do we observe the phenomenon which occurs in bulk and microscopic scale? By asking many fundamental questions will lead to some intriguing and interesting ideas to solve problems in a new way obeying nature laws.

As a materials scientist aiming to implement changes, your approach starts with identifying a specific need, such as improving material durability or efficiency. Conduct a review of existing solutions and scientific literature to pinpoint gaps. Design or select materials with the desired properties and rigorously test them through experiments. Analyze results to optimize the material, considering both performance and practicality for scaling up. Collaborate with industry partners for real-world testing, iterating based on feedback to refine the material. The goal is to commercialize a solution that is both innovative and meets market needs, ensuring it is viable for widespread adoption.

In the implementation phase, including details about how you break down the problem into bite size chunks, prioritize each step and evaluate competing approaches will demonstrate the "big picture thinking" that's necessary to minimize the timeline to execute.

In material science research to production environment, the path is indeed very routine. The POC, the pilot, the production SOP, so on. This validation and verification procedures are the solid ground to support any thing new. Always work with people who have experience in this procedures and stop innovating in V&V process.

Evaluating results in materials science involves analyzing data to assess your material's performance against objectives. Key steps include: statistical analysis of experimental data to confirm reliability, comparison with benchmarks for performance assessment, and evaluation of environmental and economic impacts. There’s so much that goes into this - it’s not a smooth sailing ship. Obtaining results may sound as the ultimate victory, but as I say - the real work starts once you start evaluating the results. There’s always so much that can go wrong with it. When I used to work on samples of battery separators, there was absolutely nothing I could do to prevent mine from getting ripped during testing - but you just have to hang on and get it done.

Evaluation of results in materials engineering is a good exercise in technical and soft skills. In my experience, customers will always look to reduce DOE sizes, sample counts, etc to cut costs. It is up-to the materials engineer to understand how can they help them with this goal. Reducing sample size to increase repeats and then scale up using Weibull etc… are some examples of this. Work together with your team to understand their perspective, use your technical knowledge to correctly interpret data. Maintain transparency and follow comprehensive reporting practices. There will be times when we can test only 2 samples instead of 10. Just report that on the data sheet. Demonstrate ethics and knowledge together

To effectively communicate your materials science findings, start by identifying your audience—scientists, industry experts, or the public. Engage with your audience through Q&A sessions and be open to feedback, fostering interaction and potential collaborations.

It’s not really about the communication as much, it’s the way it’s portrayed - there are many many ways for communication to fall beneath the loops and you have to make it in such a way that a commoner with basic knowledge in your field understands what you’re talking about.

Reporting data should be the most transparent activity in the process. Document as much as you can. Maintain all of it for your records. Share with the customer what they need, no point in overwhelming them. Always present in such a way that you tell your audience what they need to observe. To us materials engineers, we can look at the stress strain curve and know so much. Others cannot. Be mindful of your audience and use schematics and visuals to communicate more effectively

Offer guidance to junior colleagues on challenging projects. Share expertise and knowledge to support team members. Provide mentorship to develop problem-solving capabilities in others. Demonstrate leadership through mentorship initiatives. Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment. Help colleagues navigate complex materials science issues. Mentoring can involve regular meetings and check-ins and classroom as well as other shared professional learning discussions and activities. It can be helpful for a leader have a mentor observe their junior colleges and provide feedback. It can also be beneficial for the mentee to observe their mentor in action and see them model different aspects of problem.

The reproducibility of the results is an important factor. The proposed solution must be scalable and not limited to the laboratory level.

Keeping a cool head and trying to stay calm and collected throughout your work is something that I can’t emphasize enough on.

I would consider the following : Project essence: Understanding the core purpose, problem it addresses, and its significance for business or society. Set objectives: Defining specific steps required to achieve the project's goals. Timeframes: Establishing deadlines for task completion and project finalization. Existing groundwork: Reviewing previous work, resources, and data available for utilization. Direction and analytical approaches: Methods and tools to be employed for data analysis and decision-making. Experiment duration: Plans for conducting experiments, their duration, and success criteria.
