What do you do if you want to become a mentor or coach for other teachers and level up your teaching career?

Mentorship is an art. The same as teaching. Adults are older kids many a time....facing challenges and frustrantions....therefore soft skills required in approaching them. My expertise must act as a pillar of reference not the " Bible" of teaching. They must understand that my techniques are an option, a shortcut in many circumstances, but their approach is totally theirs.

Defining goals serves as a roadmap and guide throughout any mentoring or coaching role. Identify the domains of education where you excel and are eager to impart knowledge. What is your main objective? Change teaching styles? Improve soft skills? Show new materials of methods? To show teachers a new way to teach, you need to know WHAT difference you want to make. In order to do so, research about social, cultural, pedagogical, neurological and other factors that may influence the teaching aspect you want to change or improve.

Providing feedback is a wise act. The sandwich feedback is the one I have observed with my students( young teachers whom I mentored during the years) that proves efficacy as it is well received. I always start with a positive aspect, a main one, for them to feel the importance of the feedback from the very beginning, then pinpoint concisely what could have been done better/ differently( with arguments) and ending up with another positive, strong point. In this very manner, they feel seen, heard and appreciation. There is no judgement in this approach.

Leadership experience helps others trust and have faith in your leadership abilities. Teachers with leadership roles have demonstrated to be highly effective in the classroom. Therefore, it is natural that these teachers would make excellent coaches.

No amount of theory will be useful if you've never faced plenty of classrooms. The amount of students, their ages, social or cultural background and many other aspects may influence. To know HOW to deal with each case effectively, you have to face plenty of cases yourself, try, test, reflect, research and stay hungry for learning, since it's the only way to effectively teach something.

I love this point. I believe teachers aren't meant to stop learning no matter how top level their skills are. The reason is we have to always broaden our teaching as well as general knowledge to aid us in many different class/student's situations. There is always a new thing to learn.

So keep in mind the keys for good feedback: — keep it about specific, observable behaviors, so the recipient can act on it; don’t make it about vague or general impressions; — keep it professional, not about personal attributes of the recipient; — be prepared to discuss your feedback and have a dialogue; most people need some time and help to internalize and accept feedback; — include feedback on real strengths of the person! hearing about positives can be as important as hearing about development needs. I suspect I have always gotten more from mentoring than the people I have mentored.
