As a DE, one should be aware of SQL on RDBMS, SQL on Hive, Python or Scala, Big Data, Cloud and Spark. In this, SQL, a programming language and Big Data building block for a DE. Understanding why or how these became building block will help DE master their fundamentals which will be nothing but :- -> RDBMS ACID properties -> How OLTP and OLAP came in picture -> Why they are different and what are their use cases -> How these events led to evolution of Big Data framework Thus Big Data becoming a key significant requirement for a Data Engineer.
In data engineering, your fundamentals play very important role in doing your day to day tasks. 1. SQL - Most of the time, you work with SELECT statements. You should be very thorough in writing efficient SELECT statements. 2. Python/Scala - Both of these languages support scripting as well as application development programming techniques. You should be more focused on getting better in writing scripts using Python or Scala. 3. Apache Spark - Apache Spark is the core of many data processing tools these days. In order to be efficient in using Spark, you should know basics of distributed processing and cluster computing. Starting first MapReduce, HDFS and Hive is good way to get better. 4. I think performance optimization are also important skills to consider when advancing in data engineering career. With data warehouses, we can hire experienced database engineers to tune the system, optimize queries and design better data models. But in modern data platforms, especially in cloud-based solutions, due to the lack of experienced data engineers that familiar and be able to optimize those very complex platforms, many enterprises are wasting money for mediocre solutions. To be stand out as a data engineer, I think we should learn from experience of database engineers and apply these knowledge to the modern data platforms.
It is important that a DE engineer is aware of other state of the art advances in AI to understand other teams struggles and be able to use the more advanced tools to not waste so much time doing tasks that could be automated .
