There’s three key interview qualities that will get you the job: 1. an attitude of Optimism, 2. Curiosity and 3. Coachability. A lighthouse employee is someone that communicates confidence in the interview. While they may not know the employer’s specific culture, processes and goals, a lighthouse attitude stands out more than a tugboat employee – someone you have to tell them what to do. Employer’s want: 1. A future leader. 2. Employees that think like the C-Suite and 3. A collaboratively optimistic attitude that uplifts those around them and contributes to the overall growth.

Depends on your roll. Brokerage demands personality, persistence, and people skills. You can learn the technical stuff on the fly. I'd always rather have someone hungry/fun/excited working next to me than a genius who can calculate IRR in their head. We all have Excel.

Research the person you are interviewing with and the other key people on their team. Read their Linkedin profiles and learn about their backgrounds. It will give you personal talking points to connect with them about and can provide insight into their story. It is amazing how many people pursue jobs without fully understanding the culture of the company.

Research thoroughly the role, the firm, the wider team, think about the future for you and the firm, prepare questions so that in the "is there anything you would like to ask us?" section of the interview there aren't awkward silences

Sure, researching your audience can never hurt. It's great practice for the work you'll do pitching agency, tenant rep, and developments for your future clients. An open mind (and open ear) is much more important. If you have a pre-existing picture of who someone is in your head before you meet them your chances of sticking your foot in your mouth go up 10x.

Dig into their portfolio, market focus, and recent deals to understand their business landscape. Additionally, explore their culture and values to showcase how you align with their ethos. This level of preparation demonstrates your genuine interest and can help you stand out. Also, consider reaching out to your network for insights or leveraging online resources like LinkedIn to gather information. Remember, the more you know, the more confident and prepared you'll feel during the interview.

Practice talking about your skills and experiences. Keep it short and focused on how you can help the company. Use examples to make your points clear and memorable. This way, you'll show them why you're the right fit for the job.

Aside from practicing/role playing for your interview, this is actually a huge part of business in CRE. When you start out, you'll be cold calling, door docking, prospecting. Best way to learn is to role play different scenarios and responses prospects will give you. You'll be hearing "no" a lot, and role playing will help you solve and have a positive response to different scenarios.

Want to be in brokerage, you better follow up, follow up, follow up. If you can't follow up now, what are you going to do when your out cold-calling? The follow up is critical to getting into this industry.

Follow up with a hand written thank you note sent via snail mail, and also through email. And like the others said, follow up is huge.

Persistence (politely of course) will outdo almost anything or anyone, including genius, pedigree, and pre-existing connections.
