Milestones are important. I also like to establish communication expectations. How soon do you want to know if they are nearly missing a timeline? Consider how much time you might need to get help or adjust expectations when setting expectations. This has been a crucial step for me. In the past, people have different work styles and are often not aligned on when to raise the flag. Being crystal clear on that expectation also makes it easier to manage since you have turned it into something quantifiable instead of subjective.
