What do you do if a student asks a question you can't answer?

I say that`s a great question.I don`t know the answers but let`s investigate together. Open communication is the key.We are merely humans,not computers it`s ok not to know as long as we`re open and transparent.

I shocked the mini-scientists in my Primary after-school science club the other day, when I revealed that when I was learning science (I'm still learning; but that's another story!), there was NO INTERNET! The looks on their faces! But it really helped them to visualise that there is just too much information and it is literally impossible to "know everything". So if we don't know something, it is totally OK, we just need to know how to find out, and that asking questions is how we learn. In science especially, there is so much that is still not known, and not only that, we change our thinking when new info comes to light. I try to set an example by helping people be comfy with "not knowing" and to follow it with "how can I find out?"

When a student asks a question that you don't know the answer too, put some fun into it. Perhaps do an Internet search together, look up some YouTube videos, or even as a class, brainstorm possible answers. This is where creativity is born, and when you do go to verify those answers, you can see how well the students' predictions aligned with the answer, or if they were borne out. Or, make it a mini-project where the student does the research independently and then presents their findings to the class!

Students these days are at an advantage because everything is at their fingertips. And there are even fun ways to research these days with videos, long and short versions. So don't just limit your resources to just books but use those advances to your advantage.

If you do come across an answer to the student's question in your free time, do let the student know. It is important for students to have that closure and reassurance that you really do care about what they have to say!

I personally love getting out-of-the box questions because it enables me to think like them and understand them better. This allows me to plan my lessons and deliver it accordingly. So when they ask a question that I am unable to answer, I would praise them for asking and just let them know that I am unsure myself. But we can research and look it up together and find out.

It's only fair to get surprise questions from our students especially from those smart and cheeky ones. But all the more we should be extra prepared with resources and materials. We should also learn and study those materials before class from other teachers, theories, and practices so that we can approach those questions in an appropriate manner.

We do not have to embody perfection; we are fallible beings. It's entirely plausible that we genuinely do not possess the answer. Stress or mental blocks can also hinder our ability to respond. However, when faced with this scenario, it's crucial to approach it with our best attitude and a warm smile, devoid of any sense of shame. Not having an immediate answer is far from catastrophic. No one has ever suffered dire consequences due to this. These moments are opportunities to learn . As I always profess, teaching is the ultimate avenue for learning.
